Hello everyone

I was wondering if the veteran IG players could give me some tips on how to equip my units and what the most effective army would be to win tournaments with the IG.

How many points will you be playing?

What sort of tournament format? ITC, Nova, etc.?

Are you against the idea of allies?

What do you currently have?

Allies my friend. You better give your praise to the Omnissiah because you're going to need your help from the machine priesthood. Skitarii and Imperial Knights are your friends.

In terms of wargear, avoid "fluff" purchases like relics, vox casters or grenade launcher. Remember, for every 15 points you spend on a Plasma pistol for your brave, heroic officer you could've given a Guardsman a Plasma Gun which could actually accomplish something. More gun is best gun.

Avoid the Elites section. Grab a black sharpie and make it look like a large barcode rather than a section of a codex. Consider the artillery versions of the Basilisk/Medusa. They are counter-intuitively more survivable than their armored counterparts. You don't need expensive Forge World models. A 1/48 converted Flak 88 works fine.

Well let's see, the IG codex is rather limited at the moment but there are a few gems:

1) the Pask Punisher Leman Russ squad is quite potent, and is really the IG's unit that just goes "when it absolutely must be destroyed, point me at it." Almost to the point where it's an auto include. Pasks Pal (or pals) are where you can get creative, as handing preferred enemy to a Russ can make things pretty interesting.

2) Wyverns are your anti infantry bread and butter. Those things are killer.

3) infantry blobs are weak in a pure IG list but can be made dynamite with allies, particularly psykers. I've played them with Inquisitors (Coteaz is great vs deep striking opponents, and his generic buddy can bring servo skulls which the rest of your list will love) and with a Librarius conclave (expensive but hilarious). Conscripts are wonderful for screening your stuff

4) the chimera, while pricy, is a solid, durable DT. The classic cargo is Meltagun toting veterans, but if you like em Skiitari packing 2x Arc Rifles are less of a suicide squad-and they let you bring the excellent Onager Dunecrawler tank.

5) if you're not bringing Onagers, a Vendetta makes for killer flex anti tank/anti air. I'll often pack a Platoon Command Squad with flamers for a clutch objective secured drop.

I only have Guardsmen at the moment, I don't know how many are allowed and tournaments in general ? I guess I'm fine with allies but I would like an army that can function with and without if possible.

IG at a tournament level does not function well without allies.

Luckily, Inquisitoon is the least obtrusive ally-usually 2 models but they make a world of difference.

nonsense IG is horrible effective

How to win with IG

Option 1
Get some models that modfy reserves and can survive / hide for a few turn then spam Fliers like there is no tomorrow.
The current meta is verry flyer light most armies would not want to face maxed out flyer lists

Option 2
Wyverns.... + agis line, officers with good orders and a decent gun line those things are just no fun to play against for most armies

Option 3
Forge word nastyness.
There are an insane amount of IG forge world models
Including a lot of cheap T7 atillery blobz, and lots of insane lords of war.

If you are going for blob infantry guard buy some ministorum priest those are the best models ever. They give fearless hatred and 50% chance on re roll saves for the price of a single power fist
