Hey everyone. I've just been thinking a bit on what the rules will be like for the lord of my Khornate Legion (the Brass Stampede): Arctos Gorehowl. I suppose in the weakest sense I'll play him as a counts-as Bloodthirster, and in large games as An'ggrath. Otherwise, I think he deserves some rules of his own.

I've previously written a couple blurbs of fluff for him:

Arctos Gorehowl's Introduction:
Spoiler:
Would it shock you to learn, mongrel, that my blade was once sworn to the Great Wolf himself? Many a warrior I laid low at his feet, such was my fervor to please my lord… my father. We butchered worlds in his name, shed oceans of blood to bring glory to our legion.

Such lengths, such bonds of honor among my brothers and our father that we followed him into the Eye itself to confront the forces of damnation. And yet, across the threshold we found ourselves alone, abandoned by our father to the whims of the nether without a second thought. Were we not worthy to fight by his side? How much blood had we shed to bring him victory a thousand times over? And in the end, we were nothing to him, left to perish in the roiling nightmare domain of the gods. Nine of us, left behind as chattel.

With a howl that echoed across the fel realm, I vowed to avenge this dishonor by the one I called father. By axe and tooth and fist, vengeance would be mine. My anger served as a beacon in the warp. My cries of anguish were answered by my true father. The Bloodfather. In my mind, he whispered a bargain by which I would have my revenge. The price was simple: Blood! Skulls!

In weakness my brothers turned their blades against me, decrying my willingness to pursue the eightfold path as madness and my vow of vengeance against Russ as treachery. They accepted their fate, and so I sealed it. Eight skulls I offered as my first tribute to the blood god. It was a hard won triumph to overcome the chosen of the Great Wolf, but my rage and my axe split them apart one by one. With the father vanished, the slaughter of his sons would have to suffice.

I had pleased my god. One more act, he whispered, would cement our bond. With the blood of my slain brothers and that pouring from my own wounds, I drew the skull rune across my mangled breastplate. And so was I anointed. And so was I chosen by the Bloodfather.

How many millennia have passed since my oath of vengeance? Time is meaningless, my memories of Russ distant and ephemeral. Only blood. Only skulls. I command a legion of Khorne’s mightiest warriors. We are The Brass Stampede, and entire systems have been trampled beneath the hooves of our juggernauts.

I am Arctos Gorehowl, warlord of The Brass Stampede, and I will claim your skull.

Arctos Gorehowl's Ascension:
Spoiler:
With a grunt, Arctos Gorehowl yanked the blade of Heartseeker from within the smoking mouth of the fallen bloodthirster. The daemon-spear was unblemished by the beast’s flaming breath, nearly vibrating with delight at bathing in the blood and brain matter of its greater cousin, whose corpse twitched on the blood-caked sand of the arena.

Arctos’ equerry Viconius strode from the crowd of spectators to his master’s side. Ornate brass power armor obscured the once beautiful Astartes within. A son of Sanguinius in a former life, now another slave to the blood god.

Gorehowl silently passed Heartseeker to his equerry, and reached for the hilt of the rune-encrusted scimitar at his waist. Pulled free of its sheath, the curved blade began to growl like a dog fighting over a bone. With his free hand, the warlord raised the slain bloodthirster’s head by the icon of Khorne crowning its cranium. It took three vicious strokes of the growling blade to hack through the spine and neck muscles before loosing a bark of delight when it finally severed the massive head.

Roaring in triumph, Gorehowl lifted the mangled head before the gathered throngs of Khorne, blood pouring over his scorched armor. The warriors of the Brass Stampede erupted in a roar of their own at their master’s victory, joined by the daemons of the fallen bloodthirster’s legion. A new lord had risen to lead their hosts, proven mightier than the last in the sand of a million pulverized skulls.

“Bloodfather! Your son offers you tribute!”

Forked bolts of crimson lightning split the sky above the arena, thunder booming Khorne’s approval of one champion slaughtering another. The dark clouds began glowing, lightning spitting and crackling from within the voluminous gloom.

The sound of thunder was almost like laughter; a god’s amusement at the squabbles of playthings desperate for his approval. And yet, he was pleased.

A shape broke through the darkness of the clouds like a meteor, red electricity arcing in its wake. Folded wings and a long tail became visible as the shape plummeted toward the arena.

Viconius chuckled. “Another thirster to slay, is it?”

“No,” Arctos uttered while slowly lowering his victim’s severed head. “Something else. Something we’ve never seen before.” He quickly sheathed his scimitar and extended his hand toward his equerry, his gaze never leaving the descending monster. His gauntleted fingers closed around the shaft of Heartseeker.

The creature’s great wings unfurled a split second before it slammed into the ground, spraying bonesand across the arena. Four mighty limbs supported the daemon’s massive body, each ending in wicked talons. A thick, serpentine neck held its head aloft: horned, crested; with eyes that conveyed the unbridled malice of its spirit. Screeching, it stomped toward the warlord and his equerry.

Gorehowl smiled beneath his helm. “A warp dragon.”

Viconius stepped away, having no right to engage the beast alongside his master. The glory of a skull champion’s challenge is not willingly shared with his underlings. A part of him was eager for his master’s death. If the equerry had the chance to slay the dragon in Arctos Gorehowl’s blood, command of the new legion would pass to him. But first, the warlord would have to fall.

Arctos thrust his spear skyward, unfazed by the dragon’s approach. As he did, a bolt of crimson lightning struck the spear, its energy coruscating down the blade, through the shaft, and over the surface of the warlord's fire-blackened suit of power armor. A change came over Gorehowl – an understanding. Muffled laughter was audible even through the battered brass faceplate of his horned helm.

The dragon folded its wings and halted its advance a dozen paces from the lord of the Brass Stampede. Arctos took a spinning step forward, gathering momentum to toss the bloodthirster’s severed head at the dragon.

Thick jaws snapped shut around the head, crunching into the skull and mangling its brass icon. The great daemon lifted its head and neck to swallow the prize, now a lump in its throat descending toward the furnace of hellfire within. Sated, it lowered its head to lock eyes with Gorehowl.

Arctos dragged Heartseeker’s blade across the palm of his gauntlet, effortlessly slicing through the ceramite and into his flesh beneath. He clenched his fist and raised it to the side, a steady rivulet of blood streaming forth which the dragon greedily gulped down.

The warp dragon bowed its body, revealing a saddle between the shoulders of its wings. Arctos Gorehowl mounted the beast, and again the legions of Khorne gloriously roared to the triumph of their lord.

Now the equerry understood. He turned to the slaughter-brothers standing beside him. “Behold his ascension.”

Though not physically reformed as daemonic royalty, Arctos Gorehowl was forever soul-bonded to the dragon, inseparable and everliving. The galaxy was already fearful of the carnage wrought by the Brass Stampede, but a new terror cast a winged shadow to herald the bloodshed to come.[
/spoiler]

And in case you're interested, some WIP shots: [spoiler]

So without further adieu, here are the proposed rules:

Arctos Gorehowl on Warp Dragon: 600 points

This unit is a Lord of War

WS9 BS5 S8 T8 I5 W6 A5 Ld10 Sv2+

Unit Type: Flying Gargantuan Creature (Character)

Wargear:
- Master-crafted Plasma Pistol
- Frag & Krak Grenades
- Heartseeker
- Brass Hellplate
- Warp Dragon

Special Rules:
- Blood for the Blood God!
- Skulls for the Skull Throne!
- Daemon of Khorne
- Mark of Khorne
- Veterans of the Long War

Heartseeker: A gift from the Bloodfather himself for millennia of slaughter and tribute. The daemon dwelling within the blade is ever eager to repeatedly pierce the most vulnerable parts of a chosen victim’s body with uncanny accuracy and greedily drink in their blood.
- Heartseeker is a weapon with the following profile:
o S: User AP: 2 Type: Melee, Daemon Weapon, Specialist Weapon, Precision Strikes

Brass Hellplate: Arctos Gorehowl commissioned this suit of daemonic armor from the legendary Khornate warpsmith Hamarr Steelgnasher. Its thick brass plates have deflected many bullets and turned aside many stout blades in combat.
- Brass Hellplate provides a 2+ armor save and a 4+ invulnerable save

Warp Dragon: This daemonic reptilian behemoth was soul-bound to Arctos Gorehowl to represent his ascension as a chosen lord of Khorne. Whether summoned from the warp or banished back to the nightmare domain, their inexorable bond forever prevents their separation.

- Balebreath: The warp dragon is capable of breathing gouts of daemonic flame, incinerating flesh instantly.
o Balebreath is a shooting attack with two profiles which depend on the model’s flight mode:
§ Gliding: Range: Template S: 5 AP: 3 Type: Assault 1, Soul Blaze
§ Swooping: Range: Template S:5 AP: 3 Type: Assault 1, Soul Blaze, Torrent

- Wing cyclone: The warp dragon stoops into a dive before abruptly beating its enormous wings to slow its meteoric descent, kicking up strong gusts of wind around itself.
§ If the model switches flight modes from swooping to gliding, after it moves all infantry models within 6” of its base must take a Pinning test. Bulky and Very Bulky models are immune to this effect, in addition to any other models normally immune to the effects of Pinning.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Any feedback would be appreciated. I think I'm usually accused of making things too powerful, so I'd like to hear if I did that again here.

Notice no Strength D nonsense, no Strength 10 AP1, no Instant Death, and so on. I tried to make his rules fit his fluff, for what it's worth.

Thanks for reading!

I like him, the model is amazing, what is that dragon model made from? Specifically the body and the wings, it looks a joy to convert.

Rule wise i'm worried you've put to much attention on defense for him, and while you payed for it accordingly, i feel it means he will never make his points worth in games, considering he can at most make 5 charges a game, probably less. So my suggestion is to change him from a Gargantuan to a regular, and drop his points by at least 100pts. I feel that Gargantuan Creatures just aren't good for the game, because they can only really be handled by Grav and D-Weapons, both of which do so handily, while everything else bounces off. Specifically armies like Dark Eldar and Orks who can't handle GC at all.

Offence wise he is good, defense wise if you drop him to a FMC and the points would be about right, however i feel he needs Adamantium Will built into his Brass Hellplate, just for fluff. I'd also like to see the Dragon itself represented a little more, although i am not sure how. I can see you've made the Dragon an addition to his Statline, i would personally take a different approach. I'd drop the Str down to 6 to represent the Chaos Lord (Still Str 7 on the charge due to Furious Charge, so he can handle MC easy) and in addition to his own attacks he makes 2 attacks at Str 8 AP 2 Ws 4 at I 1 to represent the Dragon thrashing around. Just a suggestion, as it feels weird to have an I 5 Dragon and a Str 8 dude, when you could potentially do them separately.

I agree a Flying GC is crazy on the defense, hell even as a FMC he'd be crazy durable. Other than that, very solid.

Thanks to both of ya for the feedback!

The dragon's body/head are the WFB Carnosaur, and the wings are from the new Bloodthirster kit.

Okay, I like the idea of a cheaper unit in general and in the interest in fairness I think I'd be down to make the switch from GFC to FMC.

I'll have to think about the other stuff a little bit. He's gotta be able to kill Wraithknights, and at S6 even with 5+2+d6 attacks that probably isn't going to happen. Perhaps the answer is a special rule for Heartseeker called "Giantsbane" or something like that which does +2S or Fleshbane against GC or something to that effect.

*edit*

Suggestions from elsewhere include a sort of Fear aura that extends 12" and causes enemy units to take a Fear test and fall back if they fail.

A second suggestion was an anti-psyker bubble/rules which cause powers cast on Arctos/Dragon to cause Perils, and allow +2 deny the witch within the bubble.

Both interesting. I do think some sort of anti-psyker rule would be fun. Adamantium Will is okay, but accessible from the Blood Tithe table already.

*edit 2*

To represent the dragon's attacks, I have a two-fold solution:
1.) A rule which causes d3 Hammer of Wrath hits instead of 1 would work fine. This represents being slammed into, slashing claws, and strikes from the wings.
2.) Perhaps an additional rule could be that on subsequent turns following the charge the dragon makes a single tail sweep attack at I1 which is S:x2: User Type: Melee, Concussive.
3.) In addition, Stomp attacks made against the unit count a result of 6 on the Stomp table as a result 2-5, instead, resolved at Strength 7.

Because this unit simply must be able to kill a Wraithknight 1 on 1 (500 points vs. 295, no contest who should win in the end), my ideal solution for the base strength of the unit is 7, with a special rule that causes Fleshbane only against Gargantuan Monstrous/Flying Creatures.

*edit 3*

Redoing my math...

*edit 4*

Well, this is pretty stupid. Trying to balance this unit against a Wraithknight is just about impossible. Even with Fleshbane and Strength 8 base and d3 hammer of wrath hits, on average Arctos would only deal 2.9 wounds on the charge against a Wraithknight with either Scattershield configuration. And the Wraithknight equipped with the D-sword would have a ~27% chance of killing Arctos on the charge...

Its one of those situations where you'd put the model on the table and I'd say "I don't even care what the rules are, that looks fantastic"

Don't try to balance vs a Wraithknight. With those monsters you need to bring them down to a reasonable level, or raise the entire game up to theirs. Guess which one of those is the easier task?

Re; anti-psyker, you need to make it affect all powers, not powers cast on your own units. The best powers in the game are buffs, not de-buffs. If you want Khorne's psyker hatred to be anything more than a footnote in your fluff thats the way to do it.

Took a look at your blog too, how many organs did you sell to afford that many bloodcrushers? If your houseruling your dragon lord, maybe try to find a way to make those less pathetic too. Because they are really quite bad.

Woohoo thanks for replying! I was hoping I'd get a little more discussion about this beasty.

Yeah, after wasting 2 hours crunching numbers there's just not a whole lot I can do to guarantee this thing will win vs. a Wraithknight that doesn't make it totally unreasonable against anything else (except now the Tau'nar!).

I agree with the psychic thing. I attempted to make a unit earlier for that exact purpose, see http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/662812.page for the Khornate Spellbreaker.

As for all those juggernauts. Well, think of it this way: You can live with one kidney, one lung, and half a liver. I can operate my electric wheelchair with one arm, and since I'm in a chair I don't need either leg!

In truth, I bought them over a period of 2 years or so. Mostly on eBay snatching up the deals when they popped up, repeatedly offering low-ball "buy it now" offers until someone accepted. I got some off of friends who weren't using them, as well. The juggernauts were the easy part. Converting the riders is going to take me a while.

It's funny you mention making rules for those, too. Just so happens I took a crack at 40k Skullcrushers: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/651546.page

Thanks! Feel free to do so, that would be awesome. Dragons ftw.

Second, what sort of buffs would you suggest?

So far I've thought of Fleshbane for attacks against GMC (I don't think it's necessary against regular MC, since their toughness rarely exceeds 6), and maybe something involving the dragon biting onto a GMC/SHW to keep it in place, hitting on a 2+ or something.

*edit*

As a snarky aside, after the release of the Tau'nar I'm sorta inclined to keep this guy as a GFC .

Cool, that's what the BRB says, couldn't find any reference to Fleshbane.

So, in summary, I have some additional proposed rules to add to the unit. I just can't avoid the futility of trying to create a GMC slayer. Feel free to roll your eyes and make fun of me.

Not all of them at once maybe, but some ideas:

1.) Special rule for Heartseeker (his daemon weapon):Giantsbane: Attacks made against Gargantuan Creatures and Flying Gargantuan Creatures have the Fleshbane special rule. A potentially over-the-top addition would be for wound rolls of 6 to inflict Instant Death (thus d3 wounds) against them. I realize this may appear totally ridiculous, but if you factor in invuln saves and FNP, unless every attack hits and wounds it wouldn't drop a Wraithknight/Tau'nar.

2.) Dragonjaw: When engaged with a Gargantuan Creature or Flying Gargantuan Creature, the Warp Dragon may attempt to latch its jaws onto the opponent. At initiative step 10, roll a d6. On a result of 3+ the warp dragon has locked its jaws around the target's limb, keeping it in place. For the duration of that combat, the locked enemy may not Hit & Run and Arctos Gorehowl receives a +1 modifier for his to hit rolls, but the dragon may make no further special attacks.

3.) Tail Sweep: At initiative step 1, the warp dragon sweeps its tail. For every model in base contact with Arctos Gorehowl, roll a d6. On a 4+ that model is struck by the dragon's gigantic tail, an attack with the following profile: S: x2 AP - Concussive. If the dragon has locked an opponent with Dragonjaw, it may not attempt a tail sweep during that combat.

4.) Draconic Fury: The warp dragon slams its bulk into the opponent while slashing with claws and striking with its wings. Arctos Gorehowl makes d3 Hammer of Wrath attacks when charging instead of 1.

5.) Rancorous Aura: The warp dragon is a corporeal manifestation of Khorne's strength and hatred, and as such abhors witchcraft in all its forms. Rancorous Aura extends in an 18" bubble around Arctos Gorehowl. All psychic powers manifested by enemy psykers on a unit in this bubble receive a +3 modifier when attempting to Deny the Witch. Friendly psykers attempting to manifest powers on targets in this bubble must manifest warp charges for their powers with a -1 modifier (5+ instead of 4+).

6.) Additional Wargear: Banner of Blood (no deep strike scatter for Daemons of Khorne within 6")

Let the carnival continue!

I see no reason why he just cant have rules 1-4 base, and then the other two can be upgrades he could buy.

Cool, good stuff. I think they're fairly reasonable.

There's one thing I forgot to mention before which I've been trying to figure out.

Either he stays a GFC, which only adds another ridiculous unit in a growing sea of them, or he also comes with a rule which prevents stomp rolls of 6 from removing him from play.

I think the latter is more appropriate vs. a wider range of opponents while preserving the unit's vulnerabilities.

Heartseeker: A gift from the Bloodfather himself. The daemon dwelling within the blade is ever eager to repeatedly pierce the most vulnerable parts of a chosen victim’s body with uncanny accuracy and greedily drink in their blood. - Heartseeker is a weapon with the following profile:
-- S: User AP: 2 Type: Melee, Daemon Weapon, Specialist Weapon, Precision Strikes, Giantsbane
-- Giantsbane: Against Gigantic Monstrous/Flying Creatures, all attacks made with Heartseeker have the Fleshbane special rule, and to-wound rolls of 6 inflict Instant Death.

The Warp Dragon confers the following abilities:

- Balebreath: The warp dragon is capable of breathing gouts of daemonic flame, incinerating flesh instantly.
-- Balebreath is a shooting attack with two profiles which depend on the model’s flight mode:
--- Gliding: Range: Template S: 5 AP: 3 Type: Assault 1, Soul Blaze
--- Swooping: Range: Template S:5 AP: 3 Type: Assault 1, Soul Blaze, Torrent

- Wing cyclone: The warp dragon stoops into a dive before abruptly beating its enormous wings to slow its meteoric descent, kicking up strong gusts of wind around itself.
-- If the model switches flight modes from swooping to gliding, after it moves all infantry models within 6” of its base must take a Pinning test. Bulky and Very Bulky models are immune to this effect, in addition to any other models normally immune to the effects of Pinning.

- Draconic Fury: The warp dragon throws the entirety of its bulk behind its charge, accompanied by slashing talons and strikes from its powerful wings.
-- Make d3 Hammer of Wrath attacks instead of 1 when charging an enemy unit

- Dragonjaw: The warp dragon is all too eager to snap its jaws shut around the limbs of a gigantic opponent to prevent them from fleeing and allowing its master to deliver a death blow more readily.
-- When engaged in combat with a Gargantuan Monstrous/Flying Creature, roll a d6 at Initiative Step 10. On a roll of 3+, the dragon successfully clamps its jaws around the target, providing a +1 modifier for To Hit rolls and preventing the target from using the Hit and Run special rule. The dragon may not attempt to make Tail Sweep attacks while locked on a target.

- Tail Sweep: Every appendage of a warp dragon is a deadly weapon, including its muscular tail. Unprepared foes are knocked off their feet or obliterated outright when struck by its tail.
-- At Initiative Step 1, roll a d6 for every model in base contact with Arctos Gorehowl and his dragon. On a result of 4+, that model takes a hit with the following profile: S: x2 AP: - Concussive. If the dragon currently has an opponent locked with a Dragonjaw attack, no Tail Sweep attacks may be attempted.

Rancorous Aura: Khorne channels his hatred of witchcraft into Arctos Gorehowl, creating an aura around him which attempts to sever connections to the warp for all psykers in its radius.
- Rancorous aura extends in an 18” bubble around Arctos Gorehowl. All psychic powers manifested by enemy psykers on a unit in this aura receive a +3 modifier when the Daemonkin player makes a Deny the Witch attempt. Friendly psykers attempting to manifest powers on targets in this bubble must manifest warp charges for their powers with a -1 modifier.

Exalted Blood Banner: A banner emblazoned with the Bloodfather’s skull rune waves proudly from the saddle on the warp dragon’s back, beckoning the blood god's warriors to join the fray and rally around their overlord.
- Adds +1 to combat resolution
- Once per game, the controlling player may activate the banner. When activated, it allows Arctos Gorehowl to charge d6 + 6”.
- Models with the Mark of Khorne or Daemon of Khorne special who attempt to Deep Strike within 6” of this model do not scatter. No other models are affected.
