Road-Raging Blood Angel Biker
Behind you...
|
I've been out of the hobby for a while and wanted to get back in with some blood angels. I'm on a budget as I only get £25 a week looking to start a small collection. I have the rulebooks already including codex. What's a good few units to start with? (Not sure if it's in the right place but oh well)

You'll still find a lot of the models from the recent deathstorm boxed set on ebay for a very reasonable price. I know a guy who recently couldn't get £30 for all the BA models from that set. All still new on the sprue.
Still can't believe no-one fancied that deal.

I have noticed the same as the above poster when it comes to the Deathstorm box. The Tyranids from that box go for a pretty hefty price, but you can get the Blood Angels part of that box pretty cheap. I would pursue that first.

Before Martel comes in and poops all over your parade, know that Blood Angels are not a great army. They missed the sudden increase in power and decrease in points that Space Marines were given. Blood Angels literally have the same core Formation, a Battle Company, with NONE of the benefits that vanilla gets. It's a definite shafting. But the sky is not falling.
Death Company are an obvious thing. Command Squads, Dante, maybe even Vanguard Veterans if you like Storm Shields. I like Sanguinary Guard, but they do have their downsides in this world of AP2 Large Blasts... Grav Bikes with a Priest are a good unit and Las/Plas Razorbacks transporting your Tacticals. And our Predators get to move 12" and shoot two weapons at full BS. This is a big bonus. Two tri-las Predators and a Forge World Sicaran make a good set of Armor. So does a pair of Fast Vindicators. That can surprise an unsuspecting opponent but is Target Priority 1 to someone experienced. Assault Marine squads in a Drop Pod with Meltaguns is also a good unit. The only thing we really have that qualifies as an Alpha Strike.
Pick what you want out of it first though. If you want Bikes and Armor, forget Blood Angels and use Flesh Tearers. If you want Jump Pack assault units even though the game is in a shoot you edition, stick to the Baal Strike Force detachment, but have a game plan first and foremost. It's when you try to split it down the middle that you end up getting screwed.

Can't go wrong with Tactical squads.
I'm not sure what kind of player you are, narrative or competitive, but if you're more a 'narrative' player than I'd recommend you start with the following:
Sanguinary Priest -or- Captain
2x Tactical squad's
Librarian Dreadnought
That will give you a good base CAD to get you playing and build from.

BAs are kind of a bad though. and bad armies don't sell well in general.
My advice is to play an sm army, but paint and use models you like from the BA model line. This way you won't get frustrated as much.
