I recently came into possession of a bunch of wraith units for eldar. About 30 wraith gaurd/blades a few lords and a knight. My daughter - who is 10 wants to get into the game and picked the wraith models based on looks only. (Hence why i traded for the above)

My question is: how do we make a wraith army for her to use in a escalation league that's fun for her, and fits the look she wants (she dosent like the aspect warriors or guardians/tanks) without her being relegated into the land of cheese.

I'm not a fan of eldar myself. I think they are a bit broke - but if my little girl wants them she gets them.

So how do we use these models to make an army and stay "fun" for her and her opponent. She should have a good chance of winning but I don't want the others in the league badmouthing her army. (League is mostly older kids a few adults etc)

Thanks

I'm in the same boat. I went to Adepticon this spring and saw a beautiful all wraith army and I proceeded to start my own. It wasn't until after I had made the majority of my purchases that the new codex dropped.

I think you'd be fine if they were on foot.

It's when you add in WWP's and such that cause issues with your opponent.

They are all pretty heavy on the points side. So in an escalation league I don't think an opponent would find it overwhelming.

I'd be super excited to see an on foot army of all wraithguard/blades/lords/knights on the other side of the table. It really is a pretty fluffy list. It's just a bummer that the most recent codex has made the cheese stinky.

If she's set against using tanks, any talk of cheese would be unwarranted. Wraithguard/blades are plenty managable without any transport, so no worries about them. Wraithlords of any variety are fine, I doubt anyone would lift an eyebrow at them. Go mad and tool them up how she wants them, they're pretty vulnerable to the same things a dreadnought would be (minus being shot in the back).

As for the wraithknight....eeech. I don't know what the points are like in your league, but I'd only use 1 maximum, and at points values of <1500, try and avoid using 1 at all. Probably don't use the double wraithcannons, as they're quite capable of toasting practically anything from long range.

Are there any rules on army composition in this league? Wraithguard/blades are not able to be troops any longer, and you don't seem to have any hqs in there. Barring unbound, the only way to avoid picking up some guardians/avengers/rangers is to use the wraith host, which must include a wraithknight and a spiritseer, which could be a problem.

if you can go unbound you're golden though. Just use the units you've got and make a wraithlord your warlord. Sounds like it would be a pretty cool looking army!

The main thing to avoid is the D-Scythes. Those things are just insane. The vanilla Wraithcannons are bad, don't get me wrong, but are much more preferable to those guns. Wraithblades can be fun, but you have to run them on foot to get the most out of them. Consider the Wraith Host formation and running a Spiritseer. Don't run more than one Wraithknight, and give it the Suncannon if you can. The Wraithlord is perfectly fine. You might want to consider some Guardians, Rangers, or Dire Avengers to fill out the army and give it some scoring ability. Wave Serpents will solve the mobility issues of your Wraith units.

If you don't go all-out with the shenanigans (DE no-scatter Deep-Strike, Gating the Wraithguard around) you should be fine. I don't think anyone will be calling a ten-year-old girl TFG.

She is 10, don't gimp the army at all, especially if she is going up against experienced older players. I would let her play what she wants to play.

I'm with this guy. Who cares if they're broken? She's 10! Let her have fun pummelling daddy and his friends into the warp!

I will pick up a spirit seer for her, and we only got the 1 knight. He's mostly built but detached. Arms legs head body all seperate. No bits and he has the wraith cannons.
She dosent want the tanks. And no models for allies. So it's gonna be a foot slogging wraith army.

(I also thought the iyanaden book or whatever it is allowed wraithgaurd as troop anyway?)

In any case the league is fine with unbound. Most games are kill points or single objective "take and hold" style games.

My biggest concern is she will have a limited number of shots from her units - granted they are "D" - but I'm worried that first, she won't have the offensive power to compete with what's coming back, and second of she does get in range, once the D shots start hitting people getting upset at the "cheese"

I'm still rusty on 7th but don't D weapons ignore cover/armor? Only allowing invun, and are ID/auto pen?

Darthspader the Iyanden book is no longer valid sadly, it references an out of date codex.

I believe what you are looking at using now is the dataslate: eldar ghost warriors or just go straight eldar codex.

I shall check it out. Thanks

That formation seems to be worse then the one in the book but still require the same models. The books formation bonus gives battle focus - or that run+shoot combo. (Wich for a foot slogging army would be nice. Move 6, run d6 and still shoot = nice)

Here's what I'm able to list up for what we have models wise. Enough for a 2k list. Hopefully it's not Broke?

Wraith host formation

Spirit seer
Wraith lord scatter lazer/star cannon, ghostglaive
Wraith lord scatter lazer/star cannon , ghostglaive
10 wraithgaurd
10 wraithgaurd
10 wraithgaurd
10 wraith blades
1 wraith knight, scatter lazer, star cannon hev wraith cannons.
= 1980

All I have to buy is the spirit seer and a single box of wraith blades

Honestly wraithblades and that good and wraith gaurd will mostly want to go d skyth also the formation is with only 1 wraithlord and if doesn't have to be unbount to be in the formation WK wise find out if your league allows for garg creatures to fire 2 or all weapons

I find it hard to believe she doesn't like other models why not show her thunder wolf calvery or the kalestin robot maniples

Don't worry too much about what you're doing, as no list is exactly cheesy unless you truly understand what you're doing both in list building and each game you play. I've played a lot of games (At an above average level, in games that are played professionally for a lot of money) and I've heard cheese called on so many different things, but honestly most of those things were only broken given the right player, meaning that a pro would make them absolutely broken, while an average to good player could preform well with them, but not to the same extent those pros could.

The thing you should consider is that no matter how fair you make the list, or even bad, there will be people who will call it cheese and be upset when they lose, simply because of Eldar stigma. This doesn't mean you shouldn't play the list, it simply means you should expect it and be ready to deal with it in a constructive manner when the issue does come up. This can actually be a very solid lesson about perspective and bias, that can really contribute to a person outside of the game.

Other than that, play some games with her, some where you play without pulling your punches and some where you do. Let her experience the full spectrum of victory and loss, and ultimately let her play the army she wants for herself, as what she finds fun will be highly subjective. Just be always mindful of what she finds fun, and why, so that you can guide her but not control her basically.

But yea, the synopsis of what I'm saying is let her really craft the list so she feels a connection to it based on what she likes. Never really try to make it for her, but instead give her guidance when various issues come up, without actually giving her an outright answer.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

I taught her the game using marines and some old tau. She has the basics down and has been painting marines and terrain. Getting pretty good. So I showed her the web store. Went thru all the armies and models - and she liked the wraith stuff for the eldar. But thought the aspect warriors looked hard to paint or too complicated. She did like the harlequin stuff a little. But picked the wraith stuff as her fav. And tbh that's all that matters.

Especially with unbound and formations I don't think you need "troops" any more. Elsewise I'm sure a supplement would exist to allow - take a spirit seer and wraithgaurd = troops and so on, or some other process for making an all wraith army.

And so far the 3 games I've played with her she's beaten me every time. I offer help and stuff but she has a good "objective based" thought process and was good at focusing on goals in the game to get the win. Dice kind of lucky but I didn't pull punches or anything. Lists were pretty basic stuff good mix of everything for both sides.

Has anyone else here brought in Thier kid/s into the game? What kind of expirenced did you have?

Wraithhost formation is:
1 Spirit seer
1 Lord
1 Knight
3 units of Guards and/or Blades.

So you would need to dump one Lord and one Wraithguard unit. To get it bound and into one formation.

Or buy 1 knight and one more Seer. And split the Guards into smaller units and get two of the formations.

.....so it goes.

Ah yea doubling up the formations could work. But then 2 wraith knights .... People may have issue with that right?

Use the 6th edition rules for Wraithknights and D-cannons and nobody should complain.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
