So I know nothing about them. I'm playing Tau and was wondering if anyone had some tips on what to watch out for in a 1000 point game.

Thanks.

They are space marines focused on speed and hand to hand more than shooting. They lack practically every unit that makes space marines a top codex. That's the good news.

That being said, if you don't pick your shots correctly and don't space your units correctly, they can cross the board and pac-man a Tau list very quickly.

If you use a Riptide at 1K, keep it alive at all costs and pie plate any jump marines to death as quickly as possible. Meched up BA are delayed in their assaults but are far less vulnerable to pie plate doom. Kill the transports with HYMP or suits with MP.

BA are very easy to beat if you know what you are looking at on the table. This has actually been true for a long time, but new players are often blitzed by their speed.

Thanks for the tips

I'd consider myself "new" in that I have only really played against 2 of my mates all of us beginners and we were plating a lot of rules wrong.

I recently started playing in my lfgs and as such I'm coming up against more new armies.

I considered this list?

It is single CAD only. There is no Allies, named characters, FW, Low or formations allowed in the game...

The black ones are Death Company, they throw out 5 atks each on the charge and are fearless. They also have FNP so will survive a bit more than normal marines. They can also rapid fire you and assault.

BAs also have a few 13 front armour tanks and walkers. The tanks moving 12" and shooting well per turn.

Stay at maximum range and use your JSJ moves to back away. The trick is to deal enough damage to him before he backs you into a corner, because if he makes any meaningful units into assault, you are essentially dead. Even multi assaulting several suits at once he will wipe you in combat without a problem. That being said, most BA list have only one tactic: close with you very quickly and crack you in the jaw.

I dunno s5 ap5 doesn't do it for me also they are fairly static and I'd have to pay for an ethereal to make them useful which gives my opponent an opportunity for a free victory point if he kills him.

At the same time volume of dice is always good but I'm hoping the broadsides will cover this.

Yeah but I'm just afraid of him DS in or using drop pods if I build a long range army.

Fire warriors with a Cadre are way batter than Fire warriors with an ethereal imho

Also there are three things about BA lists that could worry you

Mass drop pod Melta/Flamer, they do this very well 5 man even 5 man tactical and assault squads in Pods can put out a huge amount of templates and short range melta, fragioso's also do this

If he has this style of army try to avoid his turn 1 firepower, maybe even mostly null deploy o stay close to board edges turn 1 so he's at risk of accidents with his pods, then JSJ to max range across the board and shoot him to death whilst he footslogs after you toting useless flamers

Jump pack attack, death company with packs, ASM with packs and maybe even Dante's death machine which is Sanguinary guard with a priest and Dante, everything is decent in melee, and some stuff will just multi assault win the game in melee vs Tau

Pick off Death Company (black) sanguinary guard (gold) and Vanguard (Red w/white helmets) and then ASM (red) in that order, though both Sanguinary guard and Death company will destroy everything you have in a fight so it's also about range

There is also mass av13 armies but i'll be honest i know less about them

Death Company are your priority target. They have a basic marine statline but with 2 attacks base with either a pistol and ccw or bolter standard. They pack fearless, rage, relentless (which only really factors in if he brought bolters so they can double tap and charge), feel no pain and furious charge. So they have 4 to 5 attacks on the charge each at str5 and possibly init5 if playing the Baal Strike Force detachment on a body with a 3+/5+++, all for a reasonable price. So yeah, watch out for those.

BA also have access to Assault Marines with double special weapons. Melta in a drop pod are a popular choice, but also Plasma are an option for the squad.

Prioritise killing the DC, they'll mess you up if they get chance.
