Hey everyone,
Basically looking at making a comeback to 40k. Currently repainting my old black templars in a gold and dark red theme and was curious. I have a fair few Cc marines that I'll have to use as assault marines. Unless I could say they're a Bt successor chapter? Then can I field them as crusaders?
Sorry this is a pretty stupid question but I'm a bit confused...
Also if I went with being a successor chapter do I need to use the EC?
Cheers everyone

Black Templars are a second-founding successor to the Imperial Fists. The EC is BT exclusive, neither will you have access to Crusader Squads.
Probably use IF Tactics

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

I've never met anyone who wouldn't let you use your home brew marine chapter with whatever official marine rules you want. (although I haven't played 40k in the current editions). As long as you have the appropriate models (or talk it over with your opponent before hand if you're proxying), paint them as you please.
Just make sure to post some pics in the painting forum for everyone to admire.

I am pretty sure that most folks would agree that if you use some rules then you have to use them all. For instance, if you want to use the BT chapter tactics ant the initiate/neophyte squad structure then you must use the EC as well. If you want to exclude the EC, then you have to exclude the other BT rules as well.
The color scheme is all cosmetic, do what you will. The cool thing about using your own chapter colors is that this morning they can be BT, and after lunch they can be DA, BA, UM, IF or bloody well anything you want them to be.
ETA, and there is no reason that your gold templars can't be a splinter group or successor.

These kinds of questions come up now and again. I would be absolutely astounded if someone had a problem with it. I have played with Chaos Space Marines riding Warhammer Fantasy Khorne Juggernaughts as Thunderwolf Cavalry from the Space Wolves codex. And not only in friendly games.
You can do whatever you like modelling wise with your units. As long as you follow simple rules like everything being WYSIWYG and consistency across your entire army, there's not a whole lot someone can say about it.
The galaxy is a big place. The chances of there only being one organization like the Black Templars is slim. Have at it. Is this a rule in the codex? If not, then no I don't think most people would agree with this.

Thanks heaps for replies everyone.
I have no issue taking the EC if needed but wasn't sure it was?
7e space marines are confusing... Make up your own chapter and give them want ever tactics works best? That's how it translates to me...

There is no such thing in the codex that you "have" to do as long as you fulfill the detachment requirements. You can paint your force as Black Templars using Ultramarine Chapter Tactics with a Librarian Conclave. It's your army.

Well everyone here got it wrong. You can use Black Templar chapter tactics, and BT tactics no longer require the use of the Emporers Champion.

Adeptus Mechanicus 3000 points |

If you play them using the BT rules for everything and paint them a different color with a different name, no one will care. Just don't try to mix-and-match rules from different Codices into one army (discounting allies and such of course).

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

Awesome, I thought that was the case, reading the codex didn't say anything about needing to take him but that was the old rule I suppose. He lost the holy hand grenade so don't think I'd take him in smaller point army.

Now just as a side fluff thing, Terminators can teleport via psychic powers right? Templars are anti psych... Fluff be damned it's useful?

Terminators can Deep Strike via teleportation, but it's not Psychic in nature at all. BT can take Terminators if you want them, but many people don't.

Don't believe me? It's all in the numbers.
Number 1: That's terror.
Number 2: That's terror.

From what I remember of the old BT codex Terminators were simply an upgraded version of sword breathren which were just their version of vanguard vets.
Librarians are the only non-fluffy unit to give them.

Pretty much. Although, if you paint them as Black Templars and run them as Ultramarines, be very clear with your opponent what chapter tactics you're using!
Solis Luna Astrum wrote:Well everyone here got it wrong. You can use Black Templar chapter tactics, and BT tactics no longer require the use of the Emporers Champion.
Correct. The 4th edition codex required you to take the Emperor's Champion in any army of 750 or more. That is no longer the case.

Terminator teleportation is science and engineering, not psychic witchery!

Why are termies not so loved anymore?

Any "homebrew" chapter can use any published Chapter Tactics. There is nothing stopping you from painting your marines pink and green with yellow polka dots and giving them all cat heads instead of marine heads, and then using BT tactics.

That's right.

Because they stink on ice.
