OK, I think it is safe to say this: I really suck at Infinity! When I lose to experienced players, I expect that: I am still learning. When I teach someone new and they annihilate me on their first game, clearly I have some fundamental issues in my gameplay. Are there any sources people would recommend to a newbie that would help me to build up the fundamental tactical understanding required in the game? While one game can be written off as bad luck (every face-to-face I rolled <5 on all dice and every armour save was <10), I think my biggest issues are in movement and positioning. I lose models to AROs when I thought I was in a good situation, then my AROs do not save me when I thought I had everyone positioned well. Sometimes I can later realise what I did wrong (eg a blindspot I did not identify), but most of the time I am left asking myself "what happened?"

Basic tactic is move your unit so that the target has no cover, while your unit does. Move your unit so that it is within its weapon's optimal range band. This means, essentially, memorizing, preferably through use, the weapon range bands. In ARO, dodge when it is favorable instead of shooting.

And if you shoot a unit in the back outside of its ZoC, it gets no ARO, unless it survives the shot. Always try to position your units so they cover one another, and to get multiple AROs.

Going prone to get extra cover is easy now. Always seek cover.

You need to think several orders ahead too, rather than one order at a time.

Finally, experience is the best teacher. Make an effort to unlearn what you learned from other games so that it will be easier to learn from your Infinity games, specifically the urge to move many units in a turn. Sometimes, you need to spend all your orders on one or two model.

All this is pretty basic though. You could also set up table and walk yourself through various situations too.

A few tactical rules I like to live by:

Always shoot from cover.

If you take a hit and survive you can opt to fail your guts roll to improve your cover (with most models)

Try to figure out if your model is in optimal weapon range and if the modifiers will make dodging a better option. This is very situational since in some cases you may choose to shoot anyway.

Force your opponent to burn orders. Don't reveal camo markers to dudes with rifles. Force them to discover you.

Use smoke to isolate snipers from models covering them so you don't take multiple AROs.

Use smoke + MSV2 or direct template weapons to shoot enemies while keeping your dudes safe.

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.
