Say I am running Flesh Hounds in a Daemonkin army. I am also running a Chaos Space Marine CAD with, say, Abaddon and Typhus. Now in the CSM codex, a character with 1 mark cannot join a unit with another mark. However, Flesh Hounds are Daemons of Khorne but do not actually have any Marks of Khorne. Thus, technically, I should be able to join Typhus with the Hounds, correct?

The reason you couldn't join a model from Codex Chaos Space Marines to a unit from Codex Chaos Daemons (and vice versa) was because of the Daemonic Instability rule. That being said, I don't believe Codex Khorne Daemonkin has an equivalent to the Daemonic Instability rule so it shouldn't be a problem joining Independent Characters from the two codices.

With regards to KDK IC's joining CSM units, the only loophole it creates is a Herald joining a CSM marked unit. I'd hardly call that shenanigans, though that is definitely silly fluff-wise. The Khorne Chaos Lord still has a Mark and so cannot join CSM units that have marks other than Khorne.

Khorne Daemonkin have three Independent Characters, two of which have the Mark of Khorne. The 'Marks of Chaos' rule on page 30 of Codex Chaos Space Marines doesn't allow an Independent Character with a Mark of Chaos to join a unit with a different Mark of Chaos. Therefore as jy2 noted only the Herald can join any unit with a Mark since he doesn't have a Mark. The other two Independent Characters would be unable to join any units with the Mark of Tzeentch, Nurgle or Slaanesh but could join unmarked units.

I feel Flesh hounds make great company for any hitty character. Scout move and slingshot for a fairly reliable t2 charge.

Abaddon and 20 Flesh Hounds would be hilarious.

Kharn and 20 Flesh Hounds would be equally as hilarious.
