This is my very first foray into religious artwork- so long as we aren't counting Paladins, Clerics, Menite scrutators, avenging angels of destruction, ancient Greek religious icons... well, you know- stuff.

This is a statue by Angela Johnson that I painted up (she also sculpted a larger than life size version in bronze that'll be in the Thanskgiving Point gardens).

Overall, I was really taken by the expression she got on him, and I really wanted to make that work in the painting. It isn't all the time that we see a Jesus be so expressive.

I also posted him up to CMON for those of you who care to vote. I'm honestly really wondering what the meta is like for religious art over there.

Be just state fact, i've never seen Gésus. Except in The Big Lebowski..

Anyway. This one i do enjoy. A fine paint job especially on the skin, the tint is just right to make it almost cinematic.

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

I like that you have darkened the bottom of the robes to show that they are wet - though they should really be sculpted sticking to his legs

There is not this idea.

Do you really think so, or are you joshing me? It's your experience, so it is totally legit.

I honestly get really annoyed at all the blonde, Scandanavian looking depictions of Jesus that I went out and found lots of photos of Semitic skin tones and matched those. Of course, there's a wide variety of tones for any peoples, but I avoided the lightest ones I found.

I did want the light hitting his face in a certain way- I wanted to make the light hit the head and shoulders brighter than other parts of the body. Around here we call the technique "Jesus Lighting" (from classical art) but it applies to most minis. It seemed simply wrong to miss an opportunity to use it here.

So I ended up going back and forth on him quite a bit- getting him too light for the skin tone I wanted, then getting him too dark for the lighting effect to work, then back and forth again. I hope that I pulled it off in the end.

I could see that. To be honest, I wasn't looking for wet when I made the light get darker towards his feet, but I'll take it. (It's another aspect of the "Jesus Lighting," and again, it works well with most minis).

It looks good. If I had to lend any criticism, I will say that the neck hair/shadow looks...odd.

Actually, this is a commission, so I suppose that's why I did it. My work time is split between painting armies, cake toppers and collectors pieces like this one.

I really loved working with the sculpt. I like this version of Jesus- the expression and sculpt is just so much harsher than I normally see, and the light hits him really well- always a good thing for zenithal lighting.

Yeah, the shadow sorta reads as hair on the neck to me too. More so on the close up shot of the head than in the other photos, so perhaps it is a trick of the camera/lighting.

Those robes though! Phenomenal work on the robes and skin. Approximately how many hours did you spend on this piece?
