Battle brothers are allies treated the same as your own units. They count as allies, can have your ICs join their units and all that.

But how exactly does it work, can I just take any battle brother in my army or do I need a specific formation.

You will need another CAD or allied detachment (or any other detachment available to the ally) to put them in, they can't just join the detachment for your main army.

You need to read the rules on how to make an army.

First you need to decide if you want an unbound or battleforged army, and then those sections will explain how you go about doing that.
