Subject: Building my Iron Warriors up. Should I wait for the new codex?

So, as you guys know, rumors are starting to appear related to a new CSM codex. I've got the basis of an IW army in the works with twenty marines, three Oblits, two Vendis, and three Rhinos. This is where I stopped when I was building units prior to the last codex release. I have skipped the 2012 codex all together, and now I'm starting to work on the army again. What I was wondering is, how likely do you people think it is that CSM will see another codex, and is it a good idea to wait till we see what it's like before continuing on with purchases?

If you got the disposable income to buy the models, go for it. CSM'S are easily the worst army right now though, so I'd hold off on actually playing them.

There's more rumors currently regarding some form of Tyranid release(s), and a new IG codex.
Chaos Marines are sadly stuck in a state where the model is so badly out of date and lacking in options that we're really crying for a 'Dark Eldar level' re-boot of nearly the entire line... I just don't see anything good happening for us anytime soon, unless GW thinks we're worth a Tau-sized+ release.
Couple this with Chaos Marines really having no identity beyond being "Spikey Marines who are evil."
Unfortunately when it comes to Marines, its just easier to say, "screw Chaos, SW/BA/DA/Vanilla/GK are easier to sell!"

I play my Iron Warriors pretty regularly. I enjoy them plenty although the codex isn't everything I want. I'd wait til you've finished everything there and then see where you're at once those models are done. If you really wanted to expand the army, go with some Forgeworld stuff like the Hell Talon or a Chaos Contemptor to give yourself something more to do with some up to date rules.

In the mean time, what would you say is the best route to "count as" for these guys? I was guessing just tkae the Codex: SM and say "These are traitors, but all the same gear, yo'"

Seeing that Vanilla Marines are terrible, make them count as Plague Marines to get easier access to Special Weapons.

What the hell is terrible about Iron Hands?!
Besides, Vanilla Marines are one of the top codices atm, thanks to grav spam, Gravcents, Tiggy, White Scar bikers, Chapter Master Smashfether (and the even more absurd IH's version), Gladius Strike Force, Skyhammer...
And IoM shenanigans only make it even worse!
Chaos Marines have absolutely nothing that trumps what Vanillas get.
If going the 'counts as' route for Iron Warriors, then Iron Hands are a perfect fit... Plenty of Dreads and tanks. Grav = Kai Guns. Bionics everywhere.
If you want the whole 'siege masters' shtick, then use Imperial Fist tactics, as heretical as that may feel...

Unfortunately we have no idea when that codex may come. It may be the end of the year, it may be next year, or the year after, we just have no idea.
I would say if you really want to play them and already have most of the army, use the current book and just play, but if you're waiting to spend a gob of money building or fleshing out an army, I'd wait.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

If I ever use Vanilla Marines as a term here or LO, it is in reference to the basic CSM. Otherwise I use Tacticals every time as the term.
Also, I'm still butt hurt they can't take two Special Weapons. Hence why my Tacticals are relegated to Sternguard duty (plus I hate bling on my Marines).

Just build according to the 30k list. Fluffier army and rules anyway and they really haven't changed that much. Your entire model count except the oblits is legal as well and if you want them to be more chaosy then call the oblits Tyrant Siege Terminators and run five.
|
If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |

You can use 30k rules in 40k just fine, just be advised that they scale up really well and are weaker at lower points levels because of how many expensive toys they get.

That's why I specified "technically separate", because they're meant to be separate, they're not necessary balanced against each other and you need opponent permission but it has been done and it apparently works fine.

Are you playing or collecting? If collecting, I just say download the codex, and buy the minis that you want. If you want to play, then the question is, do you need to win with plastic toy soldiers?
If you need to win with plastic toy soldiers then I guess the Chaos Space Marine codex is not for you. If you want to win, and have fun, but don't find the CSM has any flavour for you and you find flavour in the Space Marine codex that will suit your Iron Warriors then get that.
CSM may get a new codex in 2016, since there is not much left and with GW current speed or releasing stuff, it's a good bet that CSM will get a new codex. Thing is, that is no guarantee since it seems GW seems to shaft CSM and Nids. Then again, Nids got some goodies so who knows what CSM will or will not get.
So I guess it comes down to if you spend $60 for your codex and a new one comes out soon or sometime in 2016 will it be a waste or not? If a CSM doesn't come out in 2016, would saving that $60 have really mattered? That would mean you are not enjoying the hobby for just saving a measly $60.
So it comes down to what you think. Not what we think. For some $60 is a lot of money. For others, it's not much because you could be waiting over a year and not enjoying the hobby.
Is $60 really that important for you to win with plastic toy soldiers?
In the end it's about fun. Will you have fun with the CSM?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.
Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Why not just do a bunch of Relics. Not build a 30k list, but build a list with a Warpsmith and access to things like the Sicaran, Fire Raptor, Deimos Vindicator Laser of Death and Doom, Contemptors and so on. IA:13 is not codex, so it's not going anywhere. The Warpsmith is prolly not going anywhere. That's atleast where I would focus up.

CSM 'might' get updated, then again they 'might' be split into daemonkin books, rumormongers however 'might' have no idea about any of this.
If a 'good' codex with 'viable' options is the determinant for whether or not you play a faction then CSM is definitely not for you.
