Hi there,

I am about to start a Chaos Daemons army and I was wondering if the psychic power Possession gives you access to the 3 new Bloodthirsters or do you have stick with the one in Chaos Daemons codex ?

I am just wondering since they basically updated the model to be either of those 3.

Thanks in advance!

Rules for these units can be found in Codex: Chaos Daemons.
- Possession, Basic Rule Book

Which Bloodthirster is found in that codex?

White Dwarf Weekly #60 has the datasheets that allow the three new Bloodthirsters to be used in Codex: Chaos Daemons.

Can you get me the exact wording?

Unsurprisingly, it doesn't really cover the question at hand:

Own a Chaos Daemons army? Wish you could add the new Bloodthirsters to your daemonic legion? Well now you can, because Khorne’s servants in the Design Studio have created three exclusive datasheets for them. Here are our thoughts on using them in battle.

Then it tells us they can take 50 points of Daemonic Gifts, why they have Daemonic Instability and which role each Bloodthirster is best suited for and finally followed by the three datasheets.

So it doesn't state they are part of Codex: Chaos Daemons?
I would have to conclude that they are legally taken as part of a Chaos Daemon Detachment, as they have Faction: Chaos Daemon due to Datasheet icons, but that is different then being part of the Codex we are told to look in.

And did that White Dwarf update remove the base Bloodthirster from C: D?

If not, then one could make a case that Possession refers only to that specific version, and not the emotional ones from the White Dwarf.

That being said, I wouldn't have a problem with it provided you have the proper references. There's many times where GW makes an update but forgets where and how this update may affect. One just has to look at the errata (or lack there of) for Campaign: Baal not accounting for the changes in the C'tan names.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

You're just going to have to come to an agreement with your opponent on this. Or ask the TO beforehand if you are thinking about doing this in tournament play.

Now this isn't RAW, but maybe you can use it as precedent or as RAI. In the Daemonkin codex, they can summon Bloodthirsters, but they can only summon the lowest one.

I play fairly casual, but I like to get the rules right - so that's why I wondered, since there is quite the gap between the the Bloodthirster in Daemons Codex to the 3 new ones. Though it seems like the new Bloodthirster kit is supposed to only support the 3 new variants.

Actually, the 250pt Thirster is identical to the new one of equal value. iirc
