I'm planning to start up a new army, and can't decide which to go to next. Of these three, which do you prefer? Which do you prefer playing with, or even against? Choose more than one if you can't decide.

Orks if you are completely obsessed with converting stuff.

Otherwise, Necrons by a long shot.

Depends. How competitive do you want to be? I love Orks and Nidz, and would actually love to see less Necrons.

If you want a decent competitive army, Necrons, because almost everything is good/can be buffed. Otherwise, Nidz and Orks really only have 1-2 competitive builds.

Orks for me.

Tyranids are just so bland at the minute (Flyrants and whatever flavour you want).

Necrons are one of the best armies in the game and I'm not the sort of guy that gets a thrill from curbstomping someone simply because my army is better than his.

At least with Orks I can have fun using different sorts of lists and can convert stuff for them.

I now play all three. Necrons are nice because the good units are the units I actually like the look of. I have to take Tomb Blades? Oh darn, I was going to anyway. There's a Formation that is nothing but floating Terminators? Oh darn, guess I'll take that. Not a bad looking unit in a Decurion, and that's a huge bonus for me. Even the most common Sautek Dynasty paint scheme is awesome, and easy to do. I'm friggin happy with this army choice.

Tyranids are too strict in how you have to build the army. I don't want to have to take three Flyrants to win, but that's how it is. I just bought some 3rd Edition Ravenors, and I know I will never get to use them with my Red Terror. It's just not going to happen if I have any interest in winning the match. Still a fun army to play, but I just miss what they used to be too much.

Orks are a damn good time. Who cares about winning or losing. The fun part of an Ork army is when your opponent looks at what you brought and says 'Da Faq is that? It looks awesome'. Killer Trash Kanz, guns that slam things into the ground, Vindicators turned into whatever I want them to be with an MIB red button that might get pushed. So much crazy fun.

Well, the responses are leaning towards Necrons and Orks, while the polls are leaning toward Orks and Tyranids.
And I think I am starting to lean more towards Necrons. I want variety, while still being able to have a solid army. If an army only has a couple of reliable builds then I'd rather wait for a new codex before trying it out. What would you say are the pros and cons of each of these armies?

The biggest pro of Necrons is that they won't just punish you for wanting to take a specific unit, whereas the other two options have really bad units making up most of the content, ergo you have stick with very specific builds to win.

Orks for fun

Necrons if you want to win.

Necrons will have less model count than Orks and Nids. I think Orks have the most mini count then Nids and then Necrons.

I guess Nids could be more than Orks if you want to go small horde route with little monstrous creatures.

I say go with what you like the fluff the most if money is no problem and don't mind modelling and painting a lot of minis.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

We got started with Orks because it seemed like a natural counter-point to my son's Space Marines.

But, the natural ability to craft weird models -- and make them work within the scope of the models and the rules has kept us going.

Really enjoyed making an Ork Lionel Steam Engine which was powered by a tender full of Tyranid bodies -- and the rules allow for this!! An Ork Looted wagon

So, my suggestion if that seems at all what you are looking for would be Orks....

But, if you lack strategy like I do, don't count on winning much

Alot of it depends on your gaming enviroment and what army your currently have, is your local meta a very competitve or casual enviroment? Or a mix of both? And also picking an army that is as much the opposite of your current one goes a long way as well (im guessing you have Nurgle CSM?) to change things up.

19th Krieg Siege Army 7500pts.
40k/HH Night Lords 5000pts.
Orks Waaaghmacht Spearhead 2500pts.

Yeah, Nurgle CSM, as well as some Ultramarines. An opposite is exactly what i am looking for. My gaming environment is pretty competitive. We have a very active league with quite a few long time players.

I collect Necrons and Chaos but I love Chaos more for a few reasons:

1: an army with a lot of character and fluff
2: Psychic powers (which the Necrons can't use)
3: A lot more fun conversion options (in my opinion)

Necrons also have a lot of good sides ofc:

1: Easy to paint and look really good
2: Have a lot of options to become a strong and competitive army

If you were asking me I would go with orks for sure but it all comes down to what you really want out of your army. To me orks look like a lot of fun and a lot of conversion options.
