I have heard the above.
is there any truth to this?
i have been wanting to play fantasy, but there are no groups in my area that play.
one put me onto Kings of war, stating that i will be able to use fantasy models with their rule set, i was planning on building a skaven army,
and this would be the only way i could play them.
its either that or ill look into an undead force with KoW

Already happened! Mantic have just released/Are just about to release a book called Uncharted Empires, which has analogues for all theWFB armies that don't slot nicely into the 'core armies' of the game (so Elves you'll find in the core book, Lizardmen or Skaven you'll want UE for)

I believe this is the product you're looking for:
http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/kings-of-war/books/product/kings-of-war-uncharted-empires.html
So, not so much of a rumor as that's shipping soon. I believe that includes the GW races with no clear analogue in KoW presently.
EDIT: ninja'd by a pair of dig-ems!

The KoW rules are also available for free online.
http://www.manticgames.com/games/kings-of-war/free-rules.html
The starter army lists are free, but they are not complete. The cheaper rulebook contains just the rules and the army lists for the core races, and then the bigger one is hardback, and contains background information on the game world and so on as well.
The KoW Easy Army site has all the lists (including the beta Uncharted Empires lists) and you can sort of use it to do your list as it also prints all the special rules in full. It's a good resource. It's nice to have the proper rules and support Mantic though so I bought a digital copy of the full rulebook.
http://kow2.easyarmy.com/
Ratmen are a direct Skaven analogue, and KoW undead are cheap to build and are Mantic's best looking range.

nice, so the hard back is the rules but with all the back lore and other fluff.
ill take a peak at the free rules and such, then save for the starter set.
seems like a cool game, and gives me a reason to build my rat army.

Also, with regards to Core Rule Book vs Gamer's Edition, I'd recommend getting the Core Rule Book if you have to choose between the two. When they trimmed the fluff/art to make the Gamer's Edition, they forgot to update the page references.

The free online rules aren't complete either - they're missing magic items and such.

All magic items are available online on army builder. You can even see the rule text if you use the "view" button in the upper right. It's a bit of a hazzle to use compared to the list printed in the physical book, but it works out okay if you're just trying out the game.
I bought two copies of the rule book anyway.

I got my Kings of War book the other day. The game seems quite well designed and easy to understand. The fluff is decent as well. Good beginning for a game system.

I haven't actually played (bought the 1st edition, but nobody around here cared) but I like how it's abstract enough to allow a lot of flexibility. You can easily add new things into the framework for custom scenarios or campaigns. This is IMHO how a fantasy wargame should be, so kudos to Mantic. I just wish they had more presence in my area, because I'd love to play it for a large scale fantasy game. Also them adding WHFB armies for ex-WHFB players is an awesome move.
