Ultramarine Master with Gauntlets of Macragge
What's left of Cadia
|
So at some point in the next few months I'm planning on starting a Dark Eldar army. At the same time I would like to expand my Ultramarine army, as I recently finished painting up everything and having something else to paint alongside the DE would help break up any potential monotony. Here's what I have currently:
2 Captains (1 w/Power Axe and Storm Shield, the other with a Thunder Hammer)
1 TDA Chaplain
4 TH/SS Terminators (Sergeant has dual LC's)
5 Scouts w/Sniper Rifles
50 Tactical Marines (varying load outs, mostly Plasma though)
5 Devastators (4 Missile Launchers)
10 Assault Marines (2 Plasma Pistols, Sergeant has Power Axe)
4 Rhinos
1 Razorback (twin-linked Lascannon)
1 Predator (twin-linked Lascannon and Lascannon sponsons)
2 Land Raiders (1 Crusader, 1 Regular)
A few suggestions I've received for expansion ideas.:
1. Sternguard- Almost every Marine list I see on here has these guys, thanks to their specialist ammo, they can do nearly anything, so a box or two of these guys would be a very good idea I feel
2. Devastator Centurions- One of the best units our codex has, throw on grav-cannons and start murdering everything.
3. Storm Raven- I could use a flyer, and a flying gunboat/transport would fit the bill
4. Sicaran Battle Tank- I've heard lots of good things about taking one of these, would probably have to pick up a Techmarine too, but that's ok.
5. Fire Raptor Gunship- Just like with the Sicaran, I've heard nothing but positive things about taking one of these in a Marine list
6. Devastators- While my missile launcher devs do alright in most games, I think another box of them with a different loadout might be beneficial
7. Tigurius- One of the best Psykers available to Marine players and an Ultramarine to boot? Yes please. Works well with Centurions as well)
8. Vindicator- S10 AP2 Pie Plates are delicious.
Any input would be appreciated Dakka, haven't gotten to play with my Marines much so I'm still a bit rusty with this.
Thanks for any help I get in advance!

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

You need to modernize it. All of the suggestions you have are good. This one looks almost exactly like my own Ultramarines collection, though more of it. The modern toys make or break the army right now.
Sternguard are less of a need right now. The game has moved away from expensive Power Armor dudes being awesome.
Thunderfire Cannons do serious work and you should look at them.
Bikes are the bread and butter right now of Marines and there are Formations that make it easier to run them in the Kauyon book. The Formations themselves are not restricted to White Scars or Raven Guard. This is what Sternguard have been replaced with. Command Squads on Bikes with 4 Special Weapons are awesome.
My best advice is to look at the Formations in the codex and Kauyon, but lean more towards the codex, and pick one to build toward. You don't have to play it, but a lot of them are fluffy guidelines you can fill a CAD with and that way you can include those Forge World goodies like Sicarans and Fire Raptors. Gives you a nice little shopping list based around a theme.
Another thing us Ultramarines have that others don't is the Saint Tylus squad. Tyrannic War Veterans (limited Sternguard), Chaplain Cassius and INFILTRATING Stormtalons. Flyers that are on the table Turn 1, ready to kill. It's not Flyrants, so don't expect it to be grand awesome cool, but it is a nice gimmick outside of the normal.

Grav cents and some drop pods to play with some skyhammer badassery but your list looks loads of fun and with lots of options.

Yeah, the bulk of my Marines were bought between 5th and 6th edition, I think since then I've gotten 1 box of the "new" tactical marines, and that was as a gift. I'm now looking to add more of the modern stuff (flyers, sternguard, bikes etc)

Formations are a solid point to look at.
You’ve got a demi company. Good base. You don’t have any of the other formations to boost yourself to a full Gladius.
10th company taskforce is easy. Just grab two more scout boxes. You can mix and match here, but I’d recomend at least one non-sniper box worth in a LSS. You can gear them all sorts of ways, either bolters for drive-bys, CC for assault, or shotguns for a middle ground. I like scout bikes, but they are not for everyone.
Vets, for a 1st company TF. Sternguard are very good, but vanguard can also be a lot of fun.
More tanks would let you field the armored formation.
One goal would be to boost your army to a full battle company on the shelf. 100+ marines. You are not that far out. 10 more tacs, 15 devs, and 10 more assault marines. Plus a command squad and 2-3 dreads. As long as the number of bodies is right, you can mix things up a bit. Ie. instead of another jump squad, get some bikes.
Speaking of bikes, they are quite good these days, even for non-white scars. Your collection is a bit light on FA stuff in general. TML/HB speeders are also fun.
Some gear upgrades would probably help. Plasma pistol assault squads used to be good, back when they were a 5ppm upgrade. I just take flamers these days. If your army was equipped anything like mine, you might want to revisit your sergeants. Part of my modernization plan was to replace most of them with combi weapons. A new dev box for heavies, and a sternguard box for sarges can help get your troops up to speed. YMMV depending on what you actually have built.
HQ are fun to paint. If part of the reason for adding is to break up other paint jobs, they can make good rewards.
If you want to add a flyer, the talon is a good one. I’d take one over a raven.

Boosting Ultramarine Biker
|
Take my advice, bag yourself some Sternguard and Vanguard, they are great.
3 Grav Biker Squads should do.
Infiltration with Stormtalons guarantee raeg.
Cassius is pretty Sub-par as a unit.
Dev Cents are amazing, stick them witn Tigurius (Our best HQ buy'n'large)
For maximum dickery, stick Chronus on a Land Raider with a Techmarine and two servitors inside. Watch the rage as you insta-repair on a 3+, can fortify AND shoot with TL Lascannons at BS5! Added bonus if you give him a Conversion Beamer for a STR10 AP1 pieplate at 48 - 72 inches! Expensive but goddamn is it good! Mix Tigurius for Prescience and have fun with your AV14 Lascannon spitting invincible psychic churning deathstar on wheels! (Over 600 points but damn is it worth it)
Bike command squads for T5 FnP with a Smashfether is always noice. Tyrannic War Veterans lack rules, unless they exist in some unknown supplement.

Alright, so based off of the advice I got (special thanks to Nevelon and Shark for the detailed advice on what might help)
I'm planning on expanding with:
Picking up some more vets (probably Sternguard/Vanguard vets) to run the first company detachment
Some more scouts to run the 10th company formation
A box or two of bikes (assault marine stand in for a demi-company formation, or for a battle company)
Centurion Devastators (devs stand in for a demi company)
Tigurious (to use as a libby, or if I'm feeling competitive in a centstar)
Devastators (I love the new kit, plus having more weapons options would be great)
Vehicles to run the Armored Task Force (I think that's the right name, don't have the codex on me ATM)
Thank you all again for your help. You guys are great

I think the new boxed Horus Heresy set would be a nice next step. Even if you don't use the Terminators, the Mk. IV Marines would make for some really killer looking Sternguard, and the Contemptor Dreadnought would be a nice addition. Put them in some drop pods and that'd be great.
Also, as someone who's been using Gravcannon Devastators, I wholeheartedly recommend using them! They're super powerful, but expensive and only as survivable as any other Marine.
I enjoy bike squads a lot, I'd say they're a good bet too. As for the Sicarian - it's too cool NOT to take!
