I know, it sounds silly to ask, but I'm writing a book I hope to get published by Black Library and it would be convenient for one of my characters to be able to correspond with other AM colonels in a fashion similar to a live group call. I was wondering if that at all stands out to you guys as not-fluffy. Let me explain my situation:
One of the Heroes is a AM Colonel. He just dropped out of warp near the rebellious planet. But two other regiments and an inquisitor were already there, so they would want to communicate with this Hero to coordinate their strategy moving forward. How would they do this?
I figure they must have some sort of technology that can accomplish this, I just haven't read anything from black library that had this sort of situation, so I don't know how they would do it.

I reckon a lot of it would be Vox communications. Vox, Vox Vox. Vox Everwhere!
But yeah, there'd be vox communications between the ships allowing for the sort of communication you're looking to employ. I don't think there's any tech that does 'calls' in a Skype sense or a Telephone sense, but the Vox communications do the job haha.
I would recommend looking at the Warhammer 40K Wikia page(s) for Vox communications just so you're familiar with them. It'd be really bad to get to the end of your story and realise 'Crap, everything I've written about Vox is incorrect!' haha

Vox or hologram both tend to pop up in the fluff for short-range communications.
Astropaths for anything longer-range.

Ships will almost certainly have some sort of holographic projector allowing for a video call, much like the Holonet in Star Wars. Assuming of course that both parties have the equipment to have such a call. If the Inquisitor is in the field he might not necessarily have a holoprojector, or it would only be a simple video feed.
You could definitely have an almost perfect equivalent of a Skype call though.

That isn't a representation of communication, at least not the actual communication. At most its a stenographer of the verbal communication, but its more likely that its just a readout of mundane tactical information being preserved on a physical medium.

The Cain books have a couple of examples of multichannel chat using hololith tech.

"Vox" (Latin for "voice") is radio communications. Whether that's a field-phone military radio, a backpack-carried SINGCAR, a 1950s-style Ham radio set on a table or something mounted in a vehicle (from a car all the way up to a starship).
Many of the larger devices can be coupled with a holographic unit to project visual images, but such units are more-or-less stationary... they don't really appear as hand-held units (as they do in Star Wars) and not much use in a small vehicle, but in the command bunker of an IG fortification, where strategic planning and overall command is held, sure, such a thing might be present but, again, it will project visual feeds only to someone with similar equipment to receive it.
The Lord Commander speaking via holo from the rear is not going to get a live image sent out to some Captain in a forward bunker at the frontlines, nor will the Lord Commander receive visual feed from the vox-operator's (the guy standing next to the Captain) unit.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

The Night Lords book "Soul Hunter" by ADB had long range comms on the ship, but I don't remember if it had multicall function.
