Hey all,

I've been sitting on what amounts to a large IG force for years and years and I'm finally getting around to doing something with it.

I'm not trying to be super original but I also don't want them to look too close to codex Cadians. I've kicked around the notion of a joint strike force including various regiments, but I'm still trying to figure out my visual plan.

Anyway, I did 3 test models using a grey on grey scheme:

Any thoughts? Ideas? I'd be grateful for any ideas or feedback.

In terms of what kind of pile I'm sitting on it looks like an early 2000s guard army - no flyers, no AA, mostly older models.

Troops:
-70+ Cadians + 3 autocannon teams and some missile and mortar teams
-50+ Valhallans + 3 autocannon teams and a bunch of HBolter teams
-12ish Steel Legion + missile team
-8 Mordians + missile launcher guy - missing loader trooper
-8 troopers in berets + autocannon team, metal ones say "storm trooper" on the base tab. I'll probably use these as Veterans since they have a HW team.
-5 Chimera

Elites:
-9 Ratlings
-5 Ogryn

Fast Attack:
-1 Sentinel
-5 Rough Riders
-1 Hellhound

Heavy Support:
-2 Baneblades
-6 Leman Russ

Nice work, they look good. I wouldn't change anything on them. Sounds like you have a large army to paint, I'm in the same boat as you are, haha.

They look good and nice thing with a drab scheme is your officers and other specialists will really jump out on the table.

To mix it up for the command squads you can give them an Adeptus Arbites look by adding some red and silver. It'd be some nice contrast and remain thematic and on scheme

Big fan of the colour scheme, I like armies that have realistic, functional colour schemes

For a quick and easy one then sure it does the job. I don't know about anyone else but I'd get bored of it pretty quickly.

What would you do for vehicles?

Sounds like the next step is to finish off an infantry squad and see if I can make the sergeant and special weapon guys pop.

For vehicles I like the way the Vostroyan vehicles are painted in the codex. I would go a lighter to medium grey instead of the tan they are. I've considered a dark and light grey urban scheme as well since my bases are trending toward rubble but I haven't decided yet.

I like it for the reasons said above.

Avoid red or any color that stands out. Otherwise what's the point of camo?

It's a nice, easy scheme, easy to highlight, and you can make the officers stand out and pop.

Bear in mind 90% of all Guard armies are black and grey, some kind of green and tan, or red and black, at least from what I have seen.

Also bear in mind that somehow, a lot of the most famous armies have had uniforms one color, and their tanks almost the opposite color.

I mean, in WW2 US troops wore lighter shades of brown, than green, while the tanks were a dark green brown. The Germans wore green-grey uniforms, and their later tanks had a tan-red-brown paint scheme. Israeli's wear olive green uniforms and their tanks are green grey. This helps the vehicles in a mini's army stand out.

Now if you want something different or to make your army pop, do a google search for say, Ash's multicam Imperial Guard, or the Black Hawk Down IG army here on Dakka. Those show armies that really stand out.
.
Just avoid red on your guys.

The only thing I would change would be to use decals for the markings instead of freehand. Other than that the scheme looks great!
