My local is filled with Marine players as i'm sure lots are. And I'm adding to the problem by starting a new marine army myself. Any advise on what Units to work towards being most games will be Marine vs Marines?
I would guess it would depend on what chapter your facing but any general units/formation that's a must take to be competitive? My last army I bought what I liked the looks of and not what is competitive but its no fun losing every single game so don't want to go down that road again. In general I would like a drop pod heavy army but open for suggestions. Also Going with the old stand by UM chapter because that's what i want to paint. Thanks for your help!

In the forum of centurion devastators I'm guessing?
Already have a few squads of reg devastators with a couple marines w/grav. Have not played them yet so not sure how good they are with out relentless.

Isn't there a formation that gives them relentless?

Sternguard also work quite well. Vengeance rounds, plus either the tac/dev doctrine to re-roll the ones to hit kills a lot of MEQ. Plus they are generically useful. Very nice in pods.
In general keep an eye on the formations for what to get. The gladus is a solid core for a reasonable army. 1st company TF is a good way to get some vets on the table. 10th is a good low-point one. Thinks like the Skyhammer annihilation force are a bit over the top, IMHO, but if you want to be more competitive, work.
With all the different ways to build a marine list, it’s hard to specifically tailor against them. But against your “average” marine list, just be sure to take AP2/3 things when you can, and enough anti-armor stuff to deal with any tanks that show up.

2+ poison is sufficient to cripple regular meq squads. No AP 3 needed. Automatically Appended Next Post: Grimlineman wrote:Skyhammer. It's online several places. That's just as good as asking for a fabricated data sheet.

terminators work surprisngly well in marines on marine matches (at least ones where nobody is spamming bikes like a punk). they will seriously steamroll through peoples units. many times against other marines/chaos my termites have put in good work because they can actually get to CC unlike pretty much every other army matchup
im also a big fan of the vindicator laser destroyer against other marines if you play lots of cities of death, makes a great answer to razorbacks and predators, and even land raiders just bow efore their laser destroyer overlord.
also dreadnaughts, the venerable dreadnaught and ironclad are just a brutally efficient answer to deepstrike marines/drop pod marines often killing them by himself and earning all kinds of points in value. because often their sternguard and often they blow their collective combi-grav load on other things. this lets you charge in and mop up and they cant do anything because of owau

Terminators don't work well period. Any generic tac squad with combi plas/plas can put the hurt on them. That's on top of grav. On top of melta. On top of sternguard poison ammo. On top of smashfether. On top of mm attack bikes. On top of double mm landspeeders.

Whatever you do, don't bring terminators. The only marine special weapons that terminators get an armour save against are flamers, everything else goes through it. On the heavy weapon front it's not as grim but a grav-cannon or two is going to make you cry if you made the mistake of bringing terminators.

IDK, I think assault termies still have a good place even against other MEQ armies.

TH/SS terminators are pretty good still- not sure why people stopped using them so much..
Otherwise
Bikes are amazing.
Ironclad Dreadnoughts are pretty mean in a pod vs. marines.
Vindicator
3 Las predator
PlasmaCannon/Melta Devistators are great
Sternguard
SmashFaaaaker is great.

They stopped using them because they often dont contribute until the game is already won or lost.
Plasma cannons and multi meltas are poor weapons for devs.

Because they hit hard and have good defense, and are fairly low in cost for what they get. Duh.

They're not low in cost at all. Over 30ppm. They are less resilient to small arms than a tac marine.

Probably, yes. Many people just can't accept it. The 3++ helps, but no shooting and things like grav and scatterlasers just make them irrelevant.

Scouts, man.
You want you some scouts.
People who pick up space marines as their first army (or, you know, in general) field tac marines.
You know what's better at taking out tac marines than other tac marines?
Scouts.
Cheaper than a tactical marine, they have the same BS, WS, Toughness, and have the same gun. Big whoop, their save isn't as good but they still get it vs a bolter.
But you give them camo cloaks...
But you put them in ruins...
Now they have a 3+ save and they aren't vunerable to grav or AP anything.
And then you give them sniper rifles.
And suddenly they're the same cost per model with the same bs, ws, toughness, save, etc as a regular marine, and a better gun, with better range, precision shots and AP2 1/6th of the time.
You know what gives grav guns a harder time than tac marines?
Scouts.
You know what kills terminators better than tac marines?
Scouts... Maybe, I dunno.
...
Scouts!

Scouts and Bikers are the winner of the troops section. Too bad Tactical Marines don't get two Special Weapons, as I would actually use them.

Terminators are OP...
One squad of assault terminators managed to kill 16 tacticals. both squads were kitted full plas (cannon, gun, pistol because combi is stupid). I did, somehow, kill them in assault
Edit: That first line is a joke. Terminators are garbage
