Hi people, I was wondering how many formation from an allied codex can be taken ? For example, can a CSM codex take more than one allied formation from the KDK codex ? Like, can a CSM CAD take a gorepack and a charnel cohort as allies ?

Yes, but it would be a CAD and 2 seperate allied formations. Requiring 3 different detachments.

Aftermath can be calculated.

According to the rulebook, you can take as many detachments as you want.

Formations are detachments.

Ally rules state no limits on the number of detachments.

So, in reply: As many as you want so long as your points (and friends) hold out.

I can take a Necron Royal Court Formation as my Primary Detachment and then fill the rest of my army up with Assassins and Knights, and be perfectly legal and Battle-Forged.

Do note, that some tournaments limit the number of detachments you may take.

Also note, that you can even exceed the Auxiliary Formation numbers allowed for detachments like the Necron Decurion and Marine Gladius Strike Force, they just wouldn't be included in the Decurion's or Strike Force's benefits.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

The lowest point cost Detachment/Formation I can think of is an Inquisitorial Detachment featuring a single, no upgrades Ordo Xenos/Hereticus Inquisitor. The entire Detachment would be 35 points.

You could have 52 such Detachments in an 1850 point army, with 30 points left over for upgrades.

...of course, the army would be terrible, but hopefully you see my point. The number of Detachments/Formations you take is only limited by the number of points you have to spend AND can go up pretty quickly if you're dealing with small Detachments/Formations.

Inquisitors are only 25 points. So 74 possible detachments at 1850
