Obviously many will have bought the game for several purposes at once, however I'm going to assume everyone had a primary purpose in mind as they decided to (or not) get the set.

What's left of Cadia

I'm planning on picking it up to expand on my Ultramarines. I've always loved the older armor marks, and as a first founding Chapter I figure the UM would have some more complete sets of those older marks than other chapters. Plus it's a great value for it's cost, 37 Marines, plus a Contemptor, plus a board game for $150 (USD)? Yes please.

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes

I bought it to play the battle at calth game first and foremost (and model some great 30k plastics!!) However it came with these bonuses:

1- modelling hobby
2-painting hobby
3-display with my other 30k characters
4-start and expand both chaos and imperial 30k armies
5-play 30k
6-possibly use in 40k too

This game has turned out to be my best bang for buck purchase of the past 10 years

Didn't. Why? Australian pricing.

I bought it mostly to bulk out my Red Scorpion's army with a chaplain and some terminators, as well as the obvious tactical marines. The helmets are very suited to the red scorpions.

I think I'll also make a squad of alpha legionnaires out of it (30 marines! what the hell?!) to attach to my chaos army. Have loved them since I read legion, and would love to have a squad for kill team or just to attach to my chaos forces. Dreadnought will probably be a chaos one too.

I expect I'll play the game to see what it's like as well, but will just use the marines I have to make up the force I need.

I checked starting 30k, but that's not the whole story. A lot of little things cascaded together to get me to pick it up

I've already got more PA marines then I ever field, but this pushes me very close to a second battle company for 40k.
If I wanted to play 30k, I could re purpose 40+ RTB01 marines for the cause. Don't really need this box to start. It's the odds and ends FW stuff that's going to hold me back. Still, 30k was probably the biggest single reason.
Modeling was a very big reason as well. While I don't need any more of what's in the box, it will spice up the shelf and be fun to assemble and paint. The HQs in particular are very nice.
Some of the bits from the box are going to find their way to other projects. A c-melta is going to a sternguard to finish a squad, some vanguards vets are going to get new arms with retro weapons, etc.

The price was reasonable for what you get. And I had a chunk of guilt-free money in my pocket burning a hole. Seeing that a lot of the things on my wish list are redundant things, they are not going to be sexy fun purchases. Woo, painting another rhino chassis. But this box was new and shiny. I know jumping at shiny objects just validates GW's marketing strategy, but if I hadn't been following the rumors and sat on some of my spare cash, I would have passed on it.

And I do intend to play the game. I think it might be a good way to get The Boy into 40k. The rules look pretty good, simple and fun.

I bought it with the sole intent of building a 30k army. Not just for gaming, but as something I can really turn into something I'm proud to put on the shelf or the tabletop, criteria that none of my 40k armies really fit as my standard of painting has improved since I last touched them. The box itself gives me a great start to that, both in game terms and because it's just chock full of plastic that I've got mad converting.

In short, I bought it as a project on which I can really push the boundaries of my ability, and maybe get a little gaming in later on.

I am going to start a Salamander 30k force. I normally don't care for MKIV armor, however the MKIV helmets have kind of a dragon look so would make great Salamanders.

I did not get it, because currently, I have enough Space Marines for my 40k armies.
I might pick it up in the future if I require more infantry. Also, the Contemptor. Cheap Contemptor ftw!

$265 from GW.

I had the option to pick it up for $235 at my FLGS, still passed. If I had that kind of money on me I'd have picked up Halo fleet battles for only $170 but that's beside the point.

I'd love to grab a box just to paint, maybe do up a single marine in each legions colours, or a handful from each of my favoured legions. I love the Mk4 and the termi armour. But holy crap that is too much to pay when i have no interest in gaming with them.

I got 2 boxes in Aus, one gw price 1 for $208, my flgs sold out haha. I'll be using 1.5 boxes for a legion and the other half will stay dedicated to playing calth. Best of both worlds.

Picked it up to finish off the infantry portion of my 30k traitor legion, including 2 Vet Squads, a Seeker Squad, and a Cataphractii Command Squad. The HQ models and the Contemptor were a bonus, I was mostly after the marines.

When I see these AUD prices, it makes me want to cry.

To dabble in 30K but use them as Consecrator chapter marines too since that successor has a lot of Heresy era equipment.

I want just the captain and Terminators for my 13th Company Space Wolves. Having Wolf Guard in pre-heresy terminator suits makes obvious sense for them, even in 40K.

To finally start my Sons of Horus army. I wasn't part of the crowd of "If FW is ever released in plastic" This is such an economical way to start HH that I finally caved in to start it. Even though no one at my store has any interest in playing 30k. the last year I have been playing less and painting so much more.

I bought it to start a Heresy army. However, the actual game looks good, so I'm sure I'll give it a bash at some point.
