How much worse is the las than the grav load out? I have a box just sitting because I cant decide how to model them. I like the range and power of the las but seems like everyone goes Grav and there is a lot of marines in my play group so it make sense to use grav. I guess i could get las other places. i just hate the range (24) having to drop pod or taxi around with gate. is Grav just that much better? Thanks!

Effectiveness wise the grav will always do more against more targets.

two 6s kills any HP3 vehicle, and against 6+ infantry they will roll more wounds on average than lascannons. The range is the only down part but with pods and the bunkerpult you can completely mitigate that.

Las Cents are not a bad option but there are cheaper and more numerous plateforms to get las in a marine army, both within the codex and via allies. Grav on cents makes sense because the only other units that can take cannons are non relentless infantry which limits the effectiveness of the weapon.

Not to mention when combined with a librarian or the Kauyon white scar relic so they ignore cover. Makes them take meat holes out of the opposing army.

You have to give your opponent more options to fire at, have better placement, better target priority or all of the above. Taking two 3 man grav units with libbys is fine as you can generally tear the heart out of the opposing army before it retaliates, mixing in other threatening units placed purposefully to encourage targeting is a good trick. As the Art of War says; present inferiority and encourage your enemies arrogance. I use 2 5 man Legion of the damned squads with melta, multimelta, combi grav to this effect.

Tiggy can reliably make them invisible. And he makes their bolters rending. And he fits in a drop pod with them. And ultra marine tactics make them more accurate.

Just beware of the assault units that will face roll these guys.

I get that. but I run IF chapter with Pedro. Just wish that when my 3pods showded up to hurt the enemy. They didn't all die in retrun.
Sunday's game I had 2 sterngaurd squads with combi melta and Pedro in one squad grav cents in a pod ven dread 2heavy flamers and dread with assault cannon. Then rest if list was 2 stormtolans and 2 tac squads in pods
Lets just say after my alaph strike half my army was dead even after I took out a good chunk of my brothers tau army ever one was killed after they pod in on first turn.

The only time Las/Missile is worth it is with Imperial Fists chapter tactics. Tank Hunters helps make those Lascannons make sure they blow a hole through something.

This, combined with Missile Launchers they can be good but Grav on Relentless platforms is always good.

They cost the same in the end. It depends on what you are going for. The LasMis version is brutal at range, especially with IF tactics. But the Grav Cent is a monster up close. Drop Pods are a must for Grav Cents, LasMis can get by without.

I wish the models didn't look so silly, it's not a bad concept but GW kinda dropped the ball with the legs.

They should have made Devastator Terminators instead.

I like the way the models look.

Centurions with Las are ok, they're best used in an IF detachment. If I ever get around to picking up some centurions I'm going to use grav on mine.

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Don't use the dropped to put them right on the front lines. 24 inch is long so stay around 18-22 inches away and just blast.

Riptides, necrons, all vehicles, even knights will melt before this kind of firepower. Calling a devastator doctrine will get you nearly all hits and rerolling the damage will inflict mass casualties.

It sounds like Grav is better, but Las is less likely to make your opponent hate you.

On there own they are good unit, what makes people hate is the centstar nonsense using allied psykers to give a big unit invisibility/prescience. Stay away from that and you'll be ok
