Its impossible to really say which is best as "best" is entirely subjective. Favorite however is an entirely different matter.

However if you do want opinions on what is best then you at least have to specify in what area. Best at siege? Fists/Iron Warriors. Best at melee? Probably World Eaters. Best sneaking? Raven Guard.Etc etc.
You cant establish one legion as "BEST" overall. If there was just one legion that was totally the best at everything ever then that would be incredibly boring and that kind of writing is why the Ultramarines have so achieved so much hate.

Plus they were all loyalists at the first founding. There was 200 years of loyalty before the heresy started.

Dark Angels are my favorite, and not just because I play them. They have three color schemes in the same army, plus their backstory is really cool (the whole dark secret thing). And I like all the monk-like motifs on everything, like the religious-looking icons and the robes over the power armor.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Depends what you mean by Loyalist.
Personally, I think the Ultramarines and the Thousand Sons are the only Loyalist chapters because they're the only ones who fought for Mankind instead of Emprah or the Chaos Gods.

What would people think if you brought this to the table top? Ultra marines plus Thousand Sons. Say a cad of Chaos led by Ahriman plus Tigurius with a librarius conclave?

Lion El'Jonson is actually the single most loyal Primarch. Even more-so than Dorn or Guilliman.

Angelis Tenebraium.

I like the knight look, and to me, the Lion is a very believable and flawed character. Also, Sure, he's brilliant, tactical and strategic mastermind, etc., but he's arbitrary, terrible at handling his own men, and aloof.

Also, I really enjoyed Fallen Angels by Mike Lee. One of the best 40k books; believable characters and a decent plot!

Not so much he didn't disobey the Edict of Nikaea and killed Nemiel for saying he was disobeying the Emperor

I chose Ultramarines because those are the only Space Marine chapter I've collected/played. I started painting them back in the 90s because at the time I didn't know a single other person who painted/played them. Even though there are some pretty cool qualities about all the chapters, the Ultramarines will always have that distinction as my first 40K army.

My vote's on space wolves. They look the best and differ the most from the space marine norm in terms of both looks and weaponry.

Poor Raven Guard and White Scars... they're everyone's second or third favourite. That's the problem with this sort of "pick one" poll though, you get a bit of a skewing, whereas a multi-choice poll would likely show more of an idea of the popularities of the different chapters.

Three guesses what I picked.

Fists aside, I would be torn between white scars (LOVE the mongol theme) or salamanders (got a soft spot for "actual" good guys)

As someone who plays both (but not at the same time), most people wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between the 2 and would just assume the thousand sons were honour guard 'cause of their fancy helmets. The amount of times I've had comments about how nice my Ultras look when I've got the TSons (and Tz daemons!) on the table is staggering.

Besides, Ahriman is actually secretly Tigurius anyway, so it couldn't actually happen.
