I apologize if this was already posted in the past but how would you recommend starting to get into Kings of War?

What armies are "easiest to paint" and what armies are the most "fun" to play?

Would you recommend the Mega Force, Army or purchase something off of eBay?

Easiest to paint is up for debate, but probably Undead are the easiest?

They're also the nicest range of minis from Mantic.

I believe you can get a starter set that has a mini rulebook and quite a lot of Dwarf and Undead plastics here:

Add a unit of cavalry to either force and you'd have a pretty decent starting army with either army (I use GW black knights for my Revenant Cavalry for my mostly mantic undead army).

Both forces also need a couple of heroes to lead them (The undead particularly rely on having necromancers and other heroes to help them get extra movement).

The forces in Kings of War all tend to be pretty balanced, so they're all pretty fun to play, but if you have a particular playstyle perhaps we can recommend a faction in particular.

Undead or Ogres are easiest to paint and both offer unique playstyles.

Do you own any fantasy or historical miniatures of any kind? Because you will almost certainly be able to make them fit one of the army lists.

Historical miniatures (like Perry Brothers or Wargames Factory) are good.

There's also the Sigmar-Ogre route. Age of Sigmar starter sets are cheap on eBay and can easily be repurposed.

If you want to 'try before you buy' and have a printer, you can make some temporary units using paper miniatures - some nice free ones can be found at One Monk/Mayhem in Paper - which also makes some nice PDF models for purchase at Wargame Vault.

I prefer using actual miniatures, but I have several entire armies that I can fold flat and carry around in a messenger bag....

Glue them to the unit bases in nice neat ranks and you can fold them down flat, then fold them back up again for play.

Yeah, the Ogres from Stormcast route is probably the easiest and cheapest (very few models to paint, coupled with the capability to have a pretty decent large-ish army under 100 bucks with easily found and plentiful Ebay deals.)

But Undead from both Mantic and GW also benefit from easier, fast painting methods like drybrushing.

Some call the various army lists bland and boring, but Mantic found a way to have them all have various playstyles but all be pretty dang balanced.

The actual Mantic ogres arent bad either. Especially the hunters and berserkers.

Thank you for your advice. I really like the look of the undead, except for the zombies. How do the Undead play? Do they have anything unique going for them? Are they maneuverable at all?

Undead are rather funny, in a way they are the most mobile but at the same time they are not.

The ones with shambling cannot move at the double, however units with surge can "push" your shambling units in the shooting phase.

This opens up a lot of options like shooting a target before charging or rotating your units then surging them into combat etc. I have made lists with 40 surge total and have had units zooming around the battle field.

Are the maneuverable? Yes and no. In some ways the most, in other ways the worst.

It is a good feeling, yes?

I really want to see how the Empire of Dust does - Chariots with Surge... and I have to admit that the Serpent Surfers have grown on me. (GW skellies, surfing on the backs of giant metal cobras.)

The Auld Grump - for some reason, during the Drunken Kings games I always end up faking a Russian accent.... Sometime after the third cup of beer...
