Heyo,

So I'm making the jump into 30k and I've decided I want to play Death Guard. My question is which books do I need to build a list? I have HH Book 1, but I understand there is another book or two that I need to have all my options?

Also, is there a LEGIT source for the book digitally? I want the real copies, but I'd also love ot have it on pdf for my Christmas trip.

You need these 2 books to play every legion that has been released except ultramarines, and the complete word bearers http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/The-Horus-Heresy-Legion-Astartes-Gamers-Collection

If you have HH1, you can get by with just the Legiones Astartes: Crusade Army List (LACAL).

well, as a player with way to much experience with 30k death guard, you have units in HH book 1 and 2, though the best option will be to get the 2 red books that FW released as they hold all the rules for every legion and all the additions to the army list that happened throughout the 5 HH books.

Cool, thanks for the information. Now that said, are there any tips you can give for building an army?

Naturally, the chem munitions makes me want to get at least one or two squads packed to the gills with flamers to get the most out of it. But what else works well for the DG style of play?

I've had good luck with the reaping. Radgrenades being handed out like candy make for a good time.

MK III armor, terminators, dreadnoughts, and heavy support teams I almost always recommend death shroud as they are super cheap for what you really get.

DG basically flip the bird to terrain and poison, so they work well for almost any play style.

Like you, I was tempted to flamer spam (still do on 3 of my dreadnoughts, S: 6 AP: 3 FTW), but i feel it's only super effective when paired with a pipeline as your fortification. All in all for 30k, build what looks cool to you as at the moment the community seems to be less "WAAC", and more "Rule of cool"

For starters, if you haven't yet, I would probably get a BaC or two (build as 2 20-man tactical squads w/ extra CCW, 10-man veteran tactical squad w/ flamer+flamer, 6-man missile launcher squad, and convert the other 4 (really only do 3) into apothecaries (super good with DG as we often give up the ability to run), some FW terminators (possibly death shroud), and a 10-man autocannon or heavy flamer squad in MK III armor (dakkadakka and fwoom )

That gives you a functioning army that's fluffy, stupid hard to kill (3+ w/ feel no pain ), and can put out a decent amount of fire power.

Don't forget the Primarch.
All Primarchs from FW are awesome models but rather expensive.
I bought Angron from eBay. Watch out.

Oh for sure. Part of my love for the Death Guard is that Mortarion model. I'm thinking I will plan lists of at least 3k in size. Yeah, they may not see a great many games, but damn it, this is my 'rule of cool' adventure and there's no point in not going all out.

I need to get my hands on that other book, but it is hard not to throw Mortarion with his Reaper terminators into a big assault vehicle and have them spearhead the charge. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from that exemplary battle from HH1 that featured the Death Guard utterly ruining a noncompliant Hive World.

do it! I have to use a proxy spartan, but 10 2-wound terminators backed by a primarch is just the best kind of stupid

I've got 9 Deathshroud I'm working on right now - almost complete. Just finished some light weathering on em. Though they seem pretty nasty - cost efficiency wise - the grave warden terminators seem like they have way more utility. I've got 5 of them ordered

Age of Sigmar - It's sorta like a clogged toilet, where the muck crests over the rim and onto the floor. Somehow 'ground marines' were created from this...

I would take grave wardens, but I'm one of those players with a chronically crowded heavy support slot.

Also a rules question for my list building planning.

How do the rites of war work? Do I just pick one? Or only if I have a non-Primarch warlord?

If your Warlord has the Master of the Legion rule then you can pick a Rite of War. In the generic list only the Praetor has the rule, but a lot of the special characters and all of the Primarchs have it as well (of the Death Guard characters only Morturg lacks it). Each Rite of War has different rules, some just grant specials rules to certain units, others change units slots. Each also has it's own restrictions and drawbacks.

Ah okay, I understand. I get to choose the rite of war as long as I have 'Master of the Legion'. Got it. Thanks!

Are you taking the deathshroud as the compulsory HQ?

Looks okay for now. first things first: numbers. 30k seemingly requires numbers more-so then 40k does, and at 3k, you will be grossly outnumbered, even if all your guys are terminators in land raiders. I like the heavy support squad, what I would do is combine one of your terminator squads into a 10-man (it's cheaper to bring larger squads in 30k) and walk them behind as a "second wave" of sorts (but then again, I like to run foot-slogging terminator lists, very fluffy ), and bring on some more heavy support squads or tactical squads to help balance the numbers out.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.
