Hey dakka, just getting back into space marines and I was wandering - in a 1500pt game, would 2 land speeders equipped with assault cannons and multi-meltas be good enough anti-tank? I'm running a Blood Angel army and I'm not really fussed on using Devistators. Plus I've always loved the look of land speeders but they never seem worth it.
Cheers all

Go double multimelta. It's super effective. Assault cannons are overcosted.

I would think Attack Bikes might be the better choice, simply for Chapter Tactic benefits.
Ah, I see you mentioned Blood Angels....
Well.... even still.

But attack bikes can't double up on multi meltas. I've run lists with both, actually.

They can also have double heavy flamers. It's never a bad idea for SM to have a couple heavy flamers. Another thing is that BA allready have troops with heavy flamers. So, double MM would probably be better.
Or you could run LSS. They're even better with scouts. I've run LSS (regular sm codex, though) and they've proven to be very good. Basically, won me the game with all that blind and relatively cheap firepower + transport for scouts. And they benefit from infiltrate + scout. You'll be in melta range turn 1.
BA LSS are probably less effective on their own but BA scouts with cc weapons and furious charge are a very powerful tool. I prefer combi-melta and meltabombs for a sarge. But it might be worth it to invest into a power sword/lc or even probably a lance. s6 ap3 at ini5 for a lowly scout sarge. But LC are probably better since you'll still want a combi-weapon most likely.
eh, BA don't have LSS for reasons

i wanna do massed double heavy bolter Automatically Appended Next Post: like I run Gladius so the only place I have them is in a Supression Force, which given that I'm using them to spot for Whirlwinds, I'm thinking anti-infantry
also 20 points cheaper, and seems more synergistic running three in a single unit for 18 heavy bolter shots for 150 points

I will only use my Speeders in my Astral Claw list. They get Scout that way so Turn 1 I'm 24" forward and usually within Melta range with two Multimeltas. So I am guaranteed to get 1st Blood, or give it if they fail, but I like the risk. Blood Angels don't get that pretty bonus so I wouldn't even consider using them.
I have been swinging more towards Typhoons though lately to glance light armor to death if the Melta sucks. It has actually been doing well for me. Three S8 shots per speeder has a good chance of killing AV12 with 3HP on wrecked results alone. And they have been performing better against MSU squads again for 1st Blood purposes. Either way, Assault Cannons are better on other things. Speeder Storms for instance that BA don't get access to...

Oh, that's right! That's a shame. Would have been a brutal scout list. Oh, well.

I really like the Land Speeder storm. I run one in my salamanders list and fill it with a base bolter squad of squats and sarge with combi multi. It provides some nice fire support as well as being very mobile. The Deep strike jammer is also very nice.

I have used a two speeder squadron of Typhoons with HB's since I started into 40k and they have proven to be a competitor for my all time MVP unit.
I run them in a list with decent armor and threat saturation (Vindicators, Dreads, Rhinos, etc) and between that, their maneuverability, and the long range of the guns they rarely die (and even then usually in the later turns or to a disproportionately large amount of fire given their points cost and perceived durability).
They are supremely useful at getting side armor shots and even when shooting front armor you have 4 missiles to get the 5's and 6's you need to hurt heavy armor. They are also capable of dealing a pretty high volume of wounds between the hbs and frags or krak missiles.
My best tactic is to put my speeders in range of two or three targets and then shoot all of the specialist units in my army. That way I have solid anti infantry or anti armor firepower ready to hit the most advantageous target left.
I've faced opponents ranging from casual players to skilled competitive players to cheese-lords, and my Typhoons have never let me down against any foe.

Isn't one of the gladius FA options a squad of speeders? Or do you just not want to give up your bikes?

Yep, Typhoon are very good because they are cheap, can deal with a lot of things and can stay away from the enemy.
He HAS to use AT weaponry to destroy them (because of the range) and they as they are Speeder, they are so quick it is always useful to take objectives, or to see flanks.

Thanks for all the replies! I think I'll probably go with Devistators in the end from what you guys are saying. Or possibly the attack bikes, cos they seem more fun
