I purchased 3 retaliation cadres (total of 3 commanders, 3 broadsides, 3 riptides, 9 crisis suits, and a bunch of drones). I am trying to make them into an army. I am looking, and from what I see, I need to use at least one hunter cadre in order to take any of my retaliation cadres. Is this true? If it is, how should I actually make a bound army from 3 retaliation cadre boxes (since I don't have any breacher teams, strike teams, or kroot carnivores)? Farsight Enclave? Is there another core cadre other than the Hunter Cadre?

If you want to do a Hunter Contingent then yes you need 1 Hunter Cadre as your Core choice and can then do 2 Retaliation Cadres as your Auxiliaries.

But if you want to do a Dawn Blade Contingent then you can use 1 Retaliation Cadre as your Core choice and then 2 more as your Auxiliaries.

Thanks, just looked that up. I bought the 3 boxes and the new tau codex. From my research about what you talked about, the Dawn Blade Contingent is in the "mont'ka". Will I need to buy that Mont'ka book for like $70-some bucks? Thanks.

If you don't have any books you need the codex tau empire and Mont'ka. I think the digital gamers edition is the cheapest codex option if you do not need the fluff.

I have the codex, guess I got to get Mont'ka! Why does GW hate for me to have money?

If the retaliation cadre is a formation by itself, and you have the rules for it, then a single one means your army is bound.

3 also means your army is battleforged. You will have 3 detachments of retaliation cadres. You don't get the benefits from the dawnblade or hunter contingent; but the list is still fine an forged.
