Saw this in an email came to Dakka to see what it's all about. Don't see a thread on it so made one here.

Was looking at Tyranids but man $104 Canadian seems like a lot of money to buy that something that will be obsolete within the next year. I guess having most of them I don't need them, but just seems very poor on GW part to release this and become obsolete within a year. Guess I have the bitter pill in my mouth after buying 6th edition iPad version and 3 months later it's useless.

But looking at the others that I don't have, it looks like a good place to start. At least you will know all at once what the price will be if you want to start that faction. Not sure if there is any savings in here since I forget what the prices for the Tyranids were.

But I thought I would share the link for those who may be looking at starting a new army, maybe this will be a good buy for them. Or not. What I would like to know is are these the FULL codex or JUST THE RULES edition.

Let's discuss.

*edit* I think there is savings, saw one of the bundles, pay 4 for the price of 6. Good work there GW. Well some of free books, Nids for example I don't think you are saving at all. Could be wrong there though.

**edit**

Trying to find the iPad version of these bundles, and I can't find them on my iPad. I thought since the iPad logo was underneath on the page that there were for iPad as well. I think I could be wrong there. Anyone have a link for the iPad bundle version if they exist.

Yeah... that's some sticker shock, alright. Really highlights how pricey those files are :/

At $69.99, the BA one isn't too bad. I have the files from it, so no need to get it for me. The SM one is all over the place. Books from five different chapters, none of which can be used at the same time. It is less "Everything you need" and more "Everything we have".

Substantial savings on the Nids at least, Leviathan is £45 on it's own and thats before you get to the formation data slates which are something like £8 each.

Yeah, its because Black Library doesn't have ebook editions of Codex: Chaos Space Marine and Codex: Chaos Demons at all. It's a bit weird, especially since they have the supplements. Are there iBook versions of those two codices?

Yeah, I totally agree. The SM one is goofy. The would have been better off making a White Scars Collection, Imperial Fists Collection, Raven Guard Collection, etc.

While it's smart that they would consolidate them somewhere, this kind of illustrates the problem with 40k right now - I don't even know where to get the rules for some of the things I could run. It's making it harder to get a simple game in... kind of the opposite of what I think people were hoping back when rumors of rules being in boxes and the like started circulating.

Space Marine Collection is $154? GW can go feth themselves for that price. I don't care if there are 6 files, they're made of bits and bytes, not gold, and are worth half that at best.

Holy crap those prices are nuts. Battlefront releases hard back 300 page books at half that price (usually around $30-40 if curious)

I'm at that point where I'm having to download codexes offline because they come out so fast and are so expensive that only a madman would keep buying the books, let alone the dlc.

This has got to change. The books and dlc are starting to cost more than their started boxes!

Wow... I've never spontaneously screamed "feth YOU!!!!!" at my screen before. What a dickmove to take things out of the codex, charge for them separately, then bundle them all back together.

It's actually super easy to get a SIMPLE game in. You do it the way you've always done it. Buy your Codex and some units to fill out a basic detachment and have some fun. Sure, you might not have all the rules for everything your army can field, but you'll easily be able to play a casual game.

It's becoming more and more challenging to get a COMPLEX game in. Factions that aren't REALLY standalone are making it harder and harder to justify a hardline "1 CAD, 1 AD" stance to making "simple" armies. Codex: Legion of the Damned has only a single unit in it. Codex: Militarum Tempestus is almost as bad. Codex: Imperial Knights can be run alone, but works best to add a Knight to another army. Codex: Inquisition has a bunch of HQs, but no Troops and so can't even field a CAD or AD. I could go on. Harlequins. Officio Assassinorum. The two flavors of Adeptus Mechanicus. The old school "standard Force Org" is becoming a thing of the past.

As I said, for casual games, just buy your Codex and run with it. If you're playing tournaments or always want the latest and greatest, you're going to have to follow the release schedule (a sub to White Dwarf works great for this) or do some online research.

Having said all of this... I don't think these bundles are necessarily a good idea. They really illustrate that some factions have FAR more rules than others. I don't want a ZIP file with a couple of eBooks in it. What I'd really like is a single book with all the rules.

Actually... best case scenario? I'd like to see some sort of binder that comes with an army's fluff and rules as two separate, hole punched packs. Campaign books would also have hole punched inserts. You could pull out the unit/formation datasheets and insert them straight into your binder along with all of that army's other datasheets. Each datasheet would have a publication date or version number, so you'd always know which one was the latest and greatest...

Pipe dreams, I know.

And GW wonders why they are getting less and less sales. It's one thing to have high priced minis, but to have high priced books? If people are not buying the books then they are not getting into the fluff and rules for those minis. So people are not interested in buying those over priced minis. The way I see it, GW doesn't really care for sales anymore, they are perfectly happy with the select few 10 000s of people around the world to sell to instead of getting new customers in.

I was thinking of buying a few of these bundles, but because gives

- no support
-books can be out dated any time soon. Tyranids for example
-high price
-taking things out of a book and selling it separately (as Slave to Dorkness put it so well)

make me not wanting to get them. So for Tau and Necrons will not be buying those minis. Can't get into them even though the minis are nice. I really like the minis, but why pay so much for books just so I know what minis to get? I guess GW doesn't want me as a GW customer anymore. Quite simple as that.

Corvus Belli will easily welcome you. I've never looked back. Monthly releases for most factions, free rules, updated often, free army builder, high quality models, low model count.

GW the models company that happens to write rules strikes a definitive blow against the sinister forces of internet piracy.

"If only I had known!" Scream all the enraged pdf downloaders, breaking their keyboards in half and vowing to never touch the internet again, now that there is a far nobler way of obtaining the precious valuable ones and zeros that tell them how to forge a narrative with their Citadel (tm) Miniature Collection And Purchasing Hobby Materials, for a mere sum of 4,569$ And a kidney.

Yeah, 6th-7th was the first time ever I did not buy all the codex's and supplements / expansions: too much, too costly and BAD bang for the buck.

Screaming FETH-YOU at your screen seeing that page is not all that unreasonable.

<sigh> It is because all this extra stuff is so unaffordable that the game has had issues: we are forced to buy ONLY what we play.
It is harder to know your opponent's rules so makes it harder to keep everyone honest.

Thanks for this, it was nice to see many of these together, not so nice the price but hey, that is GW that is not a gaming company but a collectable model company.

Yeah, that's absolutely pants on head. There's no sense in that at all. If you happened to want all those books it's not a horrible deal but there's not much logic to it.

The sale they did before christmas was a lot better, you could snag loads of books for half price a third off.

Not only are the prices crazy the quality of the codex's have dropped right off. I only purchased the Ork codex and nearly cried when all the lovley art work has been replaced by crap photos.

Even the army list is now combined with the fluff making it harder to just flick through and see 6 - 8 units on a page at once.

It pretty much made me concentrate more on WHFB.....then they canned that too.

It is kinda too bad they didn't release the rules for that in digital editions the way they did the Cadia, Raven Guard, White Scars, and Flesh Tearers.
