Let's lay out two units right quick.

Both have Captains attached to them and are intended to follow and protect a couple of rhinos up midfield after a couple drop pods land upfield. Going Imperial Fists or Salamanders...

Captain
jump pack
artificer's armor
lightning claw
power fist

Assault Squad (10)
jump pack x10
flamer x2

and...

Captain
jump pack
artificer's armor
lightning claw
power fist

Vanguard Veterans (5)
Storm Shield x5

And here are my questions...

1) What unit will allow the Captain to live the longest, generally?
2) What unit will put out the most wounds, generally?
3) What unit is the most point efficient, while also considering alternative upgrades?

What do you guys think?

You don't need THAT many Storm Shields for the Vanguard, but with 2-3 Storm Shields you'll be able to tank wounds that you don't want to have on the HQ.

Like slayer-fan said. With the remaining points after stripping a couple of those shields off, you can squeeze in some power weapons too to make them more pokey. But yeah, I'd suggest the vanguard.

I would swap one of those weapons for a shield eternal or a gorgon's chain if your IH. If your captain is going to be in the thick of it, EW is worth it.

EW is worth its weight in gold.

EW is slightly less good with str d in the game, but its still really good.

It can still go horribly wrong. And don't forget the stomp mechanic.

Awesome, thanks for the input, guys.

If I was to run 5 vets with 2-3 storm shields, how many power weapons would be ideal and should they be on the vets with the storm shields, or the vanilla veterans?

Thanks again, guys.

I'd suggest 3. I'd suggest arming the ones without shields with the power weapons, so that they can get more attacks. With a shield, they wont get the 2 weapon attack bonus on the charge

Giving the Sergeant a Relic Blade and a Storm Shield isn't the worst idea. He isn't going to have any extra attacks in the first place, might as well get some higher strength attacks.
