Ireland

Hi all, I'll start with an introduction seen as I'm new here. My names Arty, Im from London but living out in Galway Ireland (anyone who knows it will know why). I've been in and out of the hobby for 19 years now, coming back to it last spring after a few years out. I only collect orks and have a real issue with ever putting anything 'stock' together....in short unless it's unique it doesn't leave the workshop!
So i decided having been out for a while i would start with something that doesn't matter too much if it goes wrong....so i settled for scenery.

I decided to build an ork equivalent to the Imperial bastion GW supply. I decided to go for a radar/sat tower that I could write additional rules for to make gaming more interesting.
I started with corrugated cardboard, a cardboard lava lamp tube and some pva glue. I cut the cardboard tube the lava lamp came in to become the basis of the tower, I cut the cardboard into random circular-ish shapes, each one slightly smaller than the last and stacked 'em up, found positions i was happy with and pva glued them together.
I then gave it a wrap around with some thin plasticard and started digging around in the bits box for bits to use.
I never liked the stock stompa model for the 'skirt' it has, but i bought one when they were released for the benefit of parts.
I used the 'skirt' to make a start on detailing the exterior:

I must also apologise for being computer dumb. I'm not sure how to shrink my images so if anyone can give me an idiots guide i'd be happy to shrink the images if they bother anybody (i know some forums are funny about this)
anyway, here are a few more pics of the model in its initial stage:

My next step was to start building a room on the top of the model, this will give an access door to the roof saving me having a visible staircase or ladder up:

next I built a removable roof for the room with a platform and twin-linked big shoota:

I decided on the location of the entrance door, but decided not to have an actual door. instead there is just an opening with some cloth hanging above it that will have something like 'dis way in' written upon it. I figure seen as orks never run from a fight and actively seek them out, they'd only be more than happy to have an enemy enter; same way a bear's cave doesn't need a door. I left an opening from the room to the outside of the model and added a small bracket in preparation for an exterior walkway.
in this pic you can also see the removable roof in place up top:

From that point on i got a little stuck in and added a whole bunch more details. I decided that the radar/sat dish should be magnetic so it can be removed for safe storage but also so it can be placed elsewhere on a battlefield as a relic/part to secure in a modified game where completion of the tower by recovering the parts allows its use (which could cause air cover to enter game or similar).
I got stuck into the gangway/walkway and added details to the base.
I made a small PCB with two alternating flashing red LED's and sent the cable down through the model. The two wires hang out of the bottom of the model's base currently but will have spade connections to connect to a 9v battery, which i will build a special box for and disguise as a 'generator' (this too then can become a relic/part):

The PCB can be accessed by simply removing its facia, as can be seen here:

Here's a few pics of the top platform area and a few of the details; such as bullets that have rained down from above Big Shoota, down a slopping roof and collected in a little pile.

There is still a vast amount of detailing to finish, tidying of edges and of course RIVETS! but i feel i am getting there with it. C&C welcome

Wow, that's one hell of a scratchbuilt bastion! So much detail that it's hard to take it all in. Keep up the good work
