I'm currently in a escalation league with my FLGS. Every two weeks we add 250 points to our armies and play a game with our ever increasing force. We are currently sitting at 1,000. And have started to allow allies. Currently nothing is banned from play (though Lords of War cannot be taken until 1,500 points).

Looking at my 1,000 point list. I realized I need a significant amount of reference material to run my little army. Even at 1,000 points this list seems ridiculous.

Codex: Chaos Space Marines
Crimson Slaughter: Codex supplement
Imperial Armour 13
Codex: Chaos Daemons
Codex: Space Marines
Codex: Inquisition
7th edition rule book

That's only running a single chaos space marine detachment, and one inquisition detachment.

Units from one book will reference two others. Weapon profiles wont be included in the book that provides a unit. Special rules from various sources. While I miss the days of only needing the main rule book and a single Codex. Its amazing (and pretty fun) to run my army using various sources. Due to limitations in the main codex, using other books feels like I can make a fun dynamic army with a theme that's playable.

2 to 3. Usually I have my space marines, possibly a supplement for them and usually an ally faction.

Most of the time, I run a pure list. Either SM or Eldar.

I have Stronghold Assault, for fortifications as needed (now that my ADL is not in the main rules) and the WD with the assassin in it (I keep meaning to get my Vindicare on the table)

There are a few formations from other sources I might play some day, but for the most part stick with the main ones in the codex.

So to answer the poll, 1 source, with a very rare 2nd.

I only use one, I hate using allies (despite the fact that I play DE) so I usually just run one faction/source

I very rarely use more than two. Most games I just use one.

The one exception to this is my full Imperial army. It's meant more for Apoc. games and uses 5-6 sources.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

In most of my Ork games (which make up about 70% of my games) I tend to only need the base Codex and a supplement book if I'm running a formation of some sort. Tau games only really require the main Codex.

My GK games require the GK codex, Inq codex, soon its quite possible that ill be adding the Space Marine codex, and/or Space Wolves Codex to future games. (The List of Four Armies is in the works).

Playing a strong inquisition force + Some imperial stuff / formations I feel like using that day will usually result in a lot of sources.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
When using orks its usually
Codex orks + White dwarf looted wagon (I used to use +IA8 but no longer... ) and perhaps gazkull for some of the Items. I don't like most of the external ork formations that much they just never seemed that interesting.

Depends on the army and setting. My iron warriors are run on their own while my Thousand Sons are built with Daemon Allies in mind and both are casual lists.

SM will vary between 1 and 5 sources depending on how competitive I am being. Daemons get run on their own, knights can be run pure or as Allies, sisters can be pure or with Allies too.

Tau will be generally run on their own, but I have a Firebase from the previous edition before it got nerfed that was exclusively for use as a slot in ally Formation to my SM army for competitive games.

So, 1-2 normally, max of 5.

Usually only 1, but sometimes 2-3. I sometimes take an Assassin with my Dark Angels, and if I take Cypher's Fallen Champions with my Khorne Daemonkin, I actually need three sources (Codex: Khorne Daemonkin, Codex: Chaos Space Marines and Dataslate: Cypher).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Just 1. I run a Imperial Navy unit. I wanted to play them like drop troops, but I still wanted enginseers, and autocannons, so I use vanilla rules just the core book and codex for me.

My BA army requires:

7th Edition Rulebook
Codex: Blood Angels
Shield of Baal: Exterminatus

I also attempted to run it combined with Bjorn and some dreads, in which case in addition to the above, I had to add:

Codex: Space Wolves
Champions of Fenris.

After that, I decided to run a mono-army because every time i needed to look up a rule, it took 20 minutes to find it.
