Do you guys think a BAngel tac squad with a heavy flamer, flamer and the sergeant armed with a hand flamer (or 2) is good? If so, would it be more effective in a drop pod or rhino?

Cheers

I think it's better to use 5 man with heavy flamer and combi-flamer on the sarge. Add a pod with a death wind for extra template goodness. If you're going to do that scheme.

Personnaly, I'd rather run h. flamer, melta and then inferno pistol (or two) in a pod.

Pod. Anything with 8ish inch range needs to land in the enemy face to be effective. The additional 6" disembark helps you set up a nice flamer angle.

I enjoy heavy flamer/double hand flamer 5 man squads. Sure it's a few more points than a combi, but in the face of several pods and other simultaneous threats, they get left alive sometimes to burn a second time.

Also being obsec in a dedicated pod is good. Land on a maelstrom objective, hop out, burn some dudes away, and score.

I just really hate the profile on hand flamers.

Likewise. It is way too weak. I initially had cowboy hand flamers on one of my sergeants, but swapped it for a Combi-Flamer. Maybe if the Hand Flamer was 5 points.

Take a combi flamer every time over the hand flamer. Your rarely going to fire a template weapon multiple times in one game so go for the better one. Additionally the only thing the hand flamer gives is a an extra attack, and take squads are bad in close combat.

I personally prefer the combi-flamer option over dual hand flamers. One, you don't have to worry about flubbing the roll on a lone combi-melta shot if you opt to go combi-melta since the flamer hits automatically on a combi-flamer and two, the to-wound roll is much easier vs. MEQ with a combi-flamer.

My Blood Angels Tactical Squad Sergeant currently awaiting painting is actually going to be armed with a lightning claw and a combi-flamer. The squad will consist of a Heavy Flamer primarily and a standard flamer if I opt to run it as a 10 man squad that combat-squads out when their pod arrives. Triple flamer templates out of a drop pod is nothing to sneeze at against soft targets, especially coupled with massed Bolt gun fire from the remainder of the squad once the templates have been resolved.

That's my opinion. Take it easy for now.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

If someone is running tri- or quad- flamers, would taking the Promethium Relay Pipes fortification be a good idea? It seems like it would work pretty well for them.

Probably not. You have to fire your flamers as heavy weapons to get the torrent, so you won't be able to drop in and abuse it. That and many enemies are happy shooting you to death from outside the 20ish inch range of the torrent. You'd need a compelling reason for them to be near the pipes.

That is kinda what I was thinking. I was just trying to see if there was anything I was missing.

Thanks for all the replies guys I think I'll go with the combi-flamer idea. As much as I like the idea of a sergeant duel wielding flame pistols like a champion, the combi-flamer seems a little more practical

I came in 2nd at a tournament yesterday running 2x5 tac squads with 2 hand flamers and a heavy flamer each in las/plas razors. Honestly, the 2 hand flamers do more damage than the heavy flamers against most targets. Yes, its only str3 ap6, but you get double the hits than a combi flamer, have an extra close combat weapon, and are more dangerous on overwatch. I've used those units to screen my more important stuff pretty frequently against things that want to charge you.

But 4 flamer templates coming out of a pod is tasty.
