Been Around the Block

Hello everyone,

After quite some time away I have decided to get back into the hobby via my small Tau army. I plan on doing a darker silver, black, and metallic red accented color scheme and want to have a good base that contrasts nicely but more drags the eye to the model then away from it. Would I need to worry about this if I go with a base similar to the desert type that GW uses a lot for Tau and other armies, or is there any other basing schemes that are better?

Also being that painting to me feels like a chore (I enjoy the building and playing part immensely more then painting); is there a way to add highlights to the black (clothing and such) that look tabletop acceptable and wont make me want to drop-kick a chicken? Would using a small dry-brush and only apply paint on the down stroke do this or am I limited to the small brush and individually apply each line?

Thank you in advance

I hope I'm not answering my own questions

Paint the black using a dark grey paint (I've mixed my own) & wash with black.
For sharp highlights, use the side of the brush not the tip OR use a water soluble coloured pencil.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

If you are going for a super simple base the agrelland and martian ironearth are good base paints as they will give a nice look to the base but not dragging the eye away from the model
