hello dakka,

my son recently took an interest into space marines, and now i am in search for beaky helmets as this is his favourite style...we all know they´re not cheap to come by...and for a tedious search of mine tried to find third party producers of said items...not much to be found...

so now i am thinking of converting my surplus other MK whatever into beaky ones... has anyone with less then zero sculpting skills done that before? would it look the part at all? or have you other ideas that will help me in my endeavour?

thanks in advance for all your ides and thoughts...

cheers, vik

Mk 6 helmets would not be easy to convert. Well, relatively easy to make helmets with 'beaks', but they probably wouldn't look like proper Mk 6 helmets, more like some sort of chaos mutation.

Any third party manufacturer who copied the Mk 6 helmets exactly would get stomped on by GW Legal. There may well be some who make vaguely similar beaky 'space knight' helmets, but not close enough to really pass as Mk 6. :(

Are they really that hard to get a hold off? It seems that most of the plastic marine sprues come with a few these days. Asking around the FLGS or the Swap Shop might yield a few. How many do you need?

It seems the shipping might be the prohibitive part.

I hate beaky helmets, and I'm not the only one. Post in the trade forum and I'd be surprised if you don't get a stack of them for little more than the cost of shipping

See! Plenty of otherwise smart and talented people who don’t recognize the classic awesomeness of the Mk. VI beaky. No reason not to take advantage of their lack of taste trade in a mutually beneficial manner.

LOL...ones love is another mans hate object it seems^^...

and indeed the hardest part is the shipping fee...

well...i don´t frequent any flgs as i am mostly hunting ebay for bitz and odd collections... i currently successfully could build one squad worth of ten beaky marines...but from what i have understood, my son would love a beaky army...the swap shop idea tho is a good one, as one never knows what might turn up...

thanks mates!

also...at clang... my son is not that hard lined about the true look...i was secretly thinking if i could get away with a rod of plastic card and a pencil sharper to yield some passable results...

I love beakies, mostly to break up the same Mk7's that you have in so many kits. Same reason I like Mk4s.

Remember that you can easily convert Blood Angels beakies, too. All you need to do is cut off the blood drops on the forehead. I think you get 2 or 3 in every box of BA tacticals.

Here's my beaky squad You can see the 1 drop and 3 drop helmet.

well... my son actually got hooked up with space wolves...with chaosy backpacks and currently chaos legs...to go with standard aquilla torso...then shoulderpads of spacewolves...and arms with guns mostly of puppies too...the heads i used are from DA, wolves and blood angles...i use what i can and the chapter associated details are easily to get rid of^^

Thanks, Viktor!

I really like Space Wolves models too -- some of the best space marine models out there They have some of the best heads without helms, too!

I... actually don't know. Help?

Don't you get 2-3 Beakies per Tactical Squad?

Also, Talys, you're right. Everything you say is correct, especially that Space Wolves are the best.

Oddball bits heads combi weapons any thing of that nature I try to cast myself. You can give it a few runs to get it right and still be better off than say trying to find 25+heads on bits places.

OP the cheapest and easiest way to get beaky helms is seek out the space wolves MK6 aka beaky helm on bitz sites. Becasue they have a few spikes, runes and a fur plume (i.e. are chapter specific) they typically go for a quarter to half the prike of generic beakie helms. The unwanted wolfie detail can be removed in 2 minutes with a knife and file. That's how I went about fitting half my army with MK6s.

bitsandkits.co.uk are the cheapest site I've found in my searches, they regularely to 50% or 66% sales. In demand stuff clears out pretty fast so I found I had to check the site often and be patient. Eventually I got all the parts I wanted. I personally wouldn't bother with ebay for bitz, the prices are extortionate.

OP, I was thinking a similar route for your beakie needs with the rod and pencil sharpener. The real key would be getting the shape right. It might require some PSR in the first few, until you get the work smoothed out enough from repetition.

This could also lead to some interesting variations in your Beakies, in that there would be all manner of helmets and such converted into Beakies. It'd be tedious, but it might work as an accent idea, to increase variation.

This was a tutorial posted on this site a waaaaaaay long time ago:

It's pretty effective for rank and file if you don't want to actually source up the bitz.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
