Is a Monolith worth the points? what can a Monolith do and how well can it do it?

Honestly I don't think it is worth it. 200 pts for a short range battle cannon. And the gauss blasters don't do anything that the rest of your army can't do. I would say it is a good fire magnet, but most enemies will probably just ignore it. It's sad really, I do love the look of the ol' necron pyramids

If you play heavy warrior/immortal lists, theyre a valuable asset as they warp a unit to midfield every turn or closer for rapid fire range goodness.

Couple of friends i have play crons and they use their monoliths to great effect. Though i personally think that big gun shouldnt be an Ordnance so it can actually use its other guns, its still a great vehicle. I usually have problems killing it unless i get a lucky Hammerhead shot, since the mass of warriors prevent melta uses.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

Its fun for that gimmick. But thanks to lots more Grav and Melta in the modern meta, the Monolith can't keep up. Not worth its points.

Check out the Mephrit Dynasty Resurgence Decurion formation. It turns the Monolith into a giant Ghost Ark that can revive warriors or immortals (within the formation).

I use it regularly and it's great. A change from all the decurion lists that everyone are used to.

You can do some nice Dimension Portal shenanigans with two Monoliths. But do you really wanna sink 400 Points in two overcosted bricks?

Or you can just keep buying chaos everything, and not play them. Just sit alone in your room for years, painting and detailing, and detailing some more. Then keep doing that for years until you own upwards of 10000 points of chaos. Keep shining their swords and sharpening their knives. Then some day, some wonderful day, when a new book comes out that will realize your armies' potential, come out from hiding. Everyone will have thought you had left warhammer 40k for good, but no, you had been training, preparing, and brooding for this moment. Return with such vengeance and hatred that you will not hold back, and you will destroy everything in your path. Like a true chaos crusade, wait for the right moment, then burst forth from the Eye of Terror and unleash your pain on the whole universe. And when they cry and complain that you are OP and that it's not fair. Reassure them that it's true. It isn't fair, but it's what they DESERVE. All of them, each and every one of them deserve to be obliterated into oblivion. And if they ask you to play with a fluffy army, tell them you will do so. But on game day bring the meanest nastiest, ugliest army you can. Give them no opportunity for victory, give them no opportunity for enjoyment. Your only goal is to inflict as much pain and suffering as possible. And when they cry, and they will cry, laugh at them, drink their salty tears, and bath in their sweet, sweet blood.

Monoliths are only worth it in large games. The particle whip can sometimes be useful for taking out large hoards. Because of its size, people are more likely to shoot at it and being armour 14, its quite hard to shoot. Whenever I use it, it distracts my opponent which means most of my troops can shoot without getting shot at.

It's a great model to use if you want to intentionally nerf yourself for a friendly game.

I had to look this up and wow that is awesome! I think I will use mine a lot more now (and my immortals)

You can make it work, but it will never be optimal. Two Ghost arks (almost the same points) is just so much better. Or, you know, most of the rest of the codex. It is definitely good for apocalypse, though. Teleporting units across a giant board is a big deal, and everything can die if your opponent wants to kill it, so it's durability isn't as big of an issue. Even in regular games, it's not that hard for an opponent to kill it.

Can you use your eternity gate the same turn it deep strikes?

No because it has to be done at the start of the turn

The issue is mainly Ordnance on the Particle Whip. Otherwise, it would have a Large Blast and four slighter-better Heavy Bolters.

The old Monolith was awesome, as it wasn't super-killy but was impressively hard to kill. Now it's just a 200 point...thing.

I was under the impression that you got to determine sequence for things that happen "at the beginning of the turn" like deep strike, etc

You can't use rules that are at the start of the turn on the same turn you come in from reserves (thats just a BRB rule)

You can only do it (exit portal after deep strike) when given permission, like it says in the rules for the Living Tomb formation.

Actually, I've always wondered about that.
As I have neither model, what's the dimensions of each? Are they close enough that people might not make a stink if you tried to use it as such in an actual competitive game?

Actual competitive Tournaments and the most stickly sticklers will probably not allow it

But pick ups and general people who just wanna have fun might be cool with it

I believe the base is the right size but the top side width and height is off.
