If you are playing lets say ultramarines but want to take a formation from the kauyon book (ravenguard) do you have to use the ravenguard chapter tactics or can the formation have any chapter tactics?

The gladius style formation (the Talon Strike?) requires the Raven Guard chapter tactics and all the sub formations chosen as part of it do as well.

However if you use the formations on their own, then they can be used with any chapter tactic.

Gotcha. Makes sense. I don't know why you would take the talon/speeder one for anything but iron hands unless playing full raven guard. Ty

Just look at each Detachment or Formation's Restrictions. If a specific Chapter Tactics is required, it will be mentioned. Very few Formations require a specific Chapter Tactics.

Yeah, if you are running a Gladius then all detachments within must use the same Chapter Tactics, but you're free to run any of the formations separately with different Chapter Tactics.
