Hello

I have been reading the Black Library Horus Heresy Series (GREAT BOOKS ) and have thought about building a 30k army. I want to play something like the Thousand Sons or Emperor's Children, but not with Chaos rules.
Is this possible?

That is what I am going to do for alpha legion. If you imagine that you are playing the other half of the legion that didn't turn to chaos right at the beginning fluff won't be too stupid either.

Yes its possible, very few of the Legions have dedicated "Chaos" rules yet. With the exceptions being the Word Bearer (who are mostly Chaos, but you can just not take specific Units and HQs) and the Emperor's Children, who have the Kakophonie Squads.

In the Legions book, some units and characters for the Traitor Legions are marked with an aquila (to show that they may only be selected for loyalist armies) or an eye (to show that they may only be selected for traitor armies).

So yeah, 30K was built with this in mind. For my WE, I'm building my lists so that I can swap out my Red Butchers (traitor-only) for Cataphractii if I want to play loyalists against a traitor army.

Thanks for the Replies

I will research the rules more before I make a decision.

That is literally the point of 30k

The only legion actually "dedicated" to chaos in 30k would be the word bearers (side note: I'd argue that thousand sons aren't even loyal to chaos at all, just kinda screwed into that position due to dickery, ahriman, and bad luck) You can even get away with the fact that most legions were split, and even after both Istvaans still had split loyalties. Include the fact that Mortarion was half-tricked into going traitor, and fully tricked into going chaos, Fulgrim changed his mind after fighting Mannus, but was duped by a daemon, Alpharius both then and now is basically a loyalist, and Magnus' dicking over by Tzeentch and Russ (technically Horus) the only real, 100% "eventual chaos by choice" traitors would be Horus, Lorgar, Pouty-robo, Angron, and Curze.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

AFIK the traitor/loyalist stuff is mostly for campaign/fluffy games. For a lot of causal games I don't think a lot of folks are going to fuss.

There is no Zuul, there is only war!

Traitor/Loyalist does come into play with the rules. For example (and maybe its the only example???) Word Bearers have an HQ and a Rite of War that have Preferred Enemy (Loyalist Marines) IIRC.

Even Calas Typhon, from the Death Guard, has a rule saying he can be a psyker, only if Mortarion is not present when used as loyalists. So I like being able to have a death guard army that can be loyal or evil.

There's no turning back... Triumph or oblivion.
