My buddy and myself have been playing 3ed. Orks verses Imperial Guard. I as the Guard player have won the vast majority of the games we have played. So I am wondering if the the guard are too good in this edition or is my opponent is "doing it wrong"?

My lists are tank heavy because that is what draws me to the guard. Typically I have five chimeras, two hellhounds, sentinels, lemans or arty. He fields boyz and more boyz, killa cans and kin, buggies and looted lemans.

Do you have any suggestions to "even the playing field"?

The AM, tends to have quite a few forms of blast/template weapons that are both hi Ap and str, with him running tons of boys and not using current rules for Orcs/BRB, in a war of attrition Am wins, if he was using the new Orc dex, and BRB he might stand a better chance.

Which 3rd Ed Codex were you playing with? Cuz I think there was two (one with a black border and the other with a green border). I don't know about the earlier one (green border) but the later one was considered underpowered by a few playgroups (although I never saw why, cuz I always got my ass fired off the field due to Sharpshooters Doctrine) so if you actually won with THAT, then it's just him playing bad.

Then again 3rd ed Orks were not much to write home about either.

Tell hour buddy to find the 3rd ed. Codex Armageddon codex. Use the Ork speed freaks list out of it. Much more competitive list for Orks.

It surprises me to hear the speed freak list boosts an army based around boyz and kanz, its been a long time since 3rd, can you remind me how that works?

OP have you tried swapping armies over? Also which missions are you playing?

Sadly, Kans have never been good. They seem good in practice being AV11 and S10, But they are slow moving and slow to swing and really dont have that many attacks. Add to it the old sqadron rules and you have a unit that can and does get stopped pretty quickly.

It sucks, because I six of the buggers myself and tried to get them to work from the very beginning.

So Speedfreeks drops the walking armor and you go heavier on trukk boys and drive by shootings. You also get faster stormboys. The ever fun preliminary bombardment which is really brutal against armies that field lots of individual units like Guard. You also get to run more bikes which give you a moving cover save for the rest of your army which walking green tide and Kans dont normally have (save KFF) and cover saves are definantly something you want when playing against a guard army.

The only time Kans were good was in 5th edition, for a measure of good, and had to be combined with the Big Mek too. Basically in that edition the KFF let you conga-line it to all the kans in a squadron as long as one was in range, granting them a 4+ save. That was the only time I remember that they were good, and it was only because they didn't die when you sneezed on them (they were still crap in combat).

Also Speedfreaks units had a fun mecanic.

When failing a moral test instead of fleeing towards that strange thing called a table border, they would instead flee towars the closest unoccupied Trukk, because to Speedfreaks Orks, trukks where like their home.

Even if the trukk was in the opposite direction from where the ork unit started the game, wich could give funny results.

We are rolling randomly on the mission chart. We have played Cleanse, Meatgrinder(?) and another. So far.

I am not sure what you mean by "swapping armies over."

Usually when two armies meet often and one keeps kicking the other guys butt more often than not, the players will play a few games swapping armies. Thus you can get a better perspective of your armies weakness and the other guy can maybe see how he might tone his down a bit to make it a more fair fight.

KFF kan spam was pretty good back in 5th. Give each the double tap blast cannon and slowly walk towards the enemy why the cans gave your boys a 4 up.
