I recently bought a new house and I've secured one of the rooms as a designated "40k room" YES!

so I have a poker table that I built in highschool, It's a pedestal table that is an octagon and measures about 60" across so it's a foot short of what I would need.

I'm planning on buying a 6x4 gaming mat to lay down.

I was wondering if anyone has a good idea of what I can buy to lay down as a surface to put the gaming mat on. I'd be laying this down ontop of the table, it would not need to be longer than 72" as there is space on the sides still exposed on the octagon for reserves etc.

Obviously I could just buy a sheet of plywood but I don't really want that rubbing on the top of my table.

I'd prefer something thin like a half inch or less, and possibly that could have 2 pieces/break down to easily store it.

Thanks for the help!

I aren't think that.

I'd get ply but glue felt to the bottom (or a rubber matting). You can get it cut in half or thirds or whatever you like

What I do for when we have game day at my place is I place a blanket over the table and put plywood on top of that, and my battle mat on the plywood.

If you have access to woodworking equipment in some way I'd advise to get a thin-ish sheet of plywood and reinforce it in some way(making a solid frame for it isn't a bad idea, then you can add dice holders, cupholders etc. to the frame if you want), then add some form of padding(like those furniture felt feet) to the areas that will be contacting the table.

Hardware stores up here have 2"x2" floor tiles made of chipboard, with rubber bottoms, that all slot together.

Id try find some stiff card or some thin mdf. If you are worried about it rubbing you could cover the back in felt or something

If you make an open frame with something to slot over your octagonal table then you could have a deeper playing surface allowing you to go mental with 3d modular terrain

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Also a fantastic idea. I'd love to play on something like that.
