Try an art or craft store (like a michaels, etc.) and look for scenic trees for railroad modeling but use a coupon or a sale.

I've done plenty of dead trees and stumps. I would always take real, dry twigs. Break them up and glue the together. One twig for the trunk, 2 - 4 smaller ones as roots, add a few as branches if needed. Prime black, paint, wash and drybrush. Works very well if used together with texture so the roots have something to sink in to (e.g. Vallejo Texture).

Woodland Scenics has a nice pack of twigs for this purpose but I would not buy them blind / online as they vary in size a lot: http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/S30/page/1

Check out these from my gallery (is there a neat way to add gallery images?):

Go to a model train shop and see what they have. Model railroaders have all sorts of trees.

Thanks guys !

Good trees are usually expensive, so I will wait for a sale, or will do them myself (thanks Klaus for your tips)

4Ground make some stunning trees that scale rather well with 28mm and under

I've also been pleasantly happy with the GW forest box which can be used without the leaves for dead, gnarled trees

I would try a hobby/crafts store and see what they have. I was at a crafts store yesterday to pick up some supplies and noticed they had different sizes of twigs with and without bark and driftwood for sale.

Here in Southern California normally a short hike normally gets me to some dead sage bushes, or chunks of dead sage. These make excellent old blasted burned looking dead trees when primed black and dusted with darker grey colors.

I also collect sticks, normally trying to make sure they are about a thick as my small finger or smaller, and then let them naturally dry (if they aren't when found) and snap them to make dead fall or piles of logs in terrain.

I almost always try to go with natural solutions, as they are free and are the types of things I find on hikes. But if you want off the shelf, ready to go solutions try waiting until the day before or after Halloween and then just raiding the local Micheal's. I have found great deals on dead trees from the Halloween collections. I also have picked up a few variety packs of the generic "snow dusted pine trees" right around or after Christmas too. I wanna say the last pack I bought for use in my Pathfinder games, was around 7.99? I got two foot tall trees, and then 4 of the next size down, 8 of the next and it finished with like 16 small trees, which where about the height of a SM.
