I haven't played 40K for a couple of years, I sold everything I owned to fund other wargames (<3 Infinity)

I've decided to give a tournament in a local store a try, it's 1500 points, and I know I'm taking Word Bearers.

I'm looking for help on building a list, would Daemon allies be a good choice, or Cultist allies? I'm trying to stick to the fluff of using cultists or daemons as meat shields while the Word Bearers wreck everything else.

So far I've got Zardu Layak, Mhara Gal, 5 Gal Vorbak, and 10 regular marines. (The tournament isn't until April)

How would you expand the Bearers and their allies, or would you not include the allies?

I'm a total nub when it comes to 40K, I last played when 6th was a new edition so any and all advice is appreciated. I'll be using Word Bearer 30k rules

I'd go daemon allies since they are still pretty strong these days. Or khorne daemonkin to take really powerful khorne hounds.

Its a pretty big subject and depends on playstyle a lot so I will point you towards some good posts going on these days about chaos marines/daemons/renegade tactics.

Here is a good writeup to get up to speed on renegade tactics (basically cultist army) from a recent battle report:

Here is a good chaos tactics thread going on right now:

and another smaller one worth reading:

And also this is a really great tactical breakdown of CSM/daemons beating Eldar with the key takeaway being take a couple lvl 3 sorcerers and roll on telepathy powers to get invisibility and shrouding:

Invisibility is your friend

Note - don't go with the bastion like he did just get normal void shields since apparently he played it wrong (admits it in comments but says void shield would have played out the same and probably would have been better)

If you don't have the void shield model don't worry it is out of production - just scrap build one.

He takes Belakor, and 2 lvl 3 no-mark sorcerers on bike that roll on telepathy so good chance of getting 3 psykers with invisibility.

The closest you'll get to making a Word Bearers army work is using the Crimson Slaughter supplement; your Possessed become troops and have a better table to roll on, and you get overall more useful relics for your Lord and Sorcerer.

oh, gak, I forgot to mention - I'm getting into 30K (like everyone at the minute) so I'm going to use word bearer rules in the 40k tournament
