Didn't want to make the title to long but having recently put together a tech priest dominus, I was a big surprised how bit he turned out. He dwarfs normal infantry and even my chaos lord model looks tiny to him.

On the flip side the Jokaero i got about a month ago was a lot smaller than i expected. Anyone else ever get something different than what they were expecting.

I don't know why I was surprised, but after assembling a ton of Eldar I got out a marines sprue and thought 'bloody hell, these are huge'. Even though I had handled marines extensively.

But actual models that surprised me was the Dark Eldar Archon, I don't know why I expected him to be larger than regular Dark Eldar, but he just felt small while I was building him. I was also blown away by how huge the Carnifex is.

The Knight Titan. I originally didn't think it was that big until I saw it. Same goes for most flyers really, I thought they were all roughly Valk sized but turns out the Stormraven was a lot bigger (same goes for the heldrake).

Honestly, since I was still only about a month into the hobby, my warboss surprised me. I really thought he'd be about 1.5 times as big as he actually is. I mean, he's a tall model for infantry, but it's not what I was expecting.

The first time I saw a riptide I thought “That’s it?” Seeing all the pictures online I was expecting it to be a lot bigger. But in person it was a lot smaller then I thought it would be.

For me it was also a Riptide. I had heard so many stories about the horrible Riptide, then the actual model turned out to be smaller than expected.

The Riptide I'm working on now, the model looks big but all the parts feel small. I keep thinking "nah, this can't be right this is to small to be this..." But I can see how it will be big when put together.

The Crisis Suits (old ones) were a surprise too. They look small but soak a ton of paint with their refrigerator boxes.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

I was surprised by the Stormsurge, actually. Seeing my friend's Stormsurge in person, it was actually smaller than I expected. I thought it would be as bulky as an Imperial Knight, but it's actually a bit smaller. Still a very cool model, though.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I've mostly been surprised by the size of models.

Flyers, thunderhawks, Titans (Knight, Warhound, Reaver), and super heavies in general. Often I've found them to be far larger than I thought they would be.
You see them in books near other models but it doesn't quite give them justice until you see one standing infront of you.

Otherwise I was surprised how well the Skitarii and mechanicus models when they came out looked.

Pretty much every single character model. They are always smaller than I think they should be. I donno why a Chapter Master should be bigger than a grunt marine, but I always feel disappointed when I line them all up and they are all the same size.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

For the most part I also found this. Some models, like Lysander, do feel like they are above their regular counter parts.

Any finecast model, especially Terminator armoured oness that were originally in metal. I have a metal Marneus Calgar and he's like a lead weight, its a nice feel for a model that looks bulky as he does. I also have Kaldor Draigo who is similarly bulky but I waited a month to save up for him (age 14 and no income). He got released in April and then switch 3 weeks later. I'm always dissappointed by how light he is.

Contemptor Dreadnoughts for me, they are much smaller than I anticipated. Centurions looked way better in the flesh and painted well as opposed to the ones in the magazines and webstore. Wasn't a fan of the "Missileside" Broadside until I built one of my own, I just wish the Stormsurge was a giant version of that. Honestly thought the Sicaran would be a lot bigger, it's still very nice looking but seems just a tad too small based on the pictures. Ending on a positive note, the Maleceptor is probably my favorite Tyranid model now that I've looked at a fully painted one in person, that thing is so sexy.

The Kromlech rotten butcher. His pics show him to be a good size. But DAMN is he big. I'd say easily 5-6 Inches tall.

And then there is the tau supremacy suit, that thing just seemed to get bigger and bigger as I was building it...

Pleasantly surprised: Dakkajets - a genuine joy to assemble and paint (maybe it was flashbacks to my Airfix days).
Thumbs up to the SW guard kit too - so many options and poses.

Ghastly horrors: metal Hive Guard. No. No. No.

Thumbs down also to the vents on the Tyrannocyte air brakes. Why, just why?

Have to agree with Dakkajet. Got one kit and promptly got two more despite being a sub-optimal unit

I had previously bought a small group of "chosen" chaos space marines that come from the dark vengeance starter kit, and were used to how they looked for a bit.

Then I got my plague marines, and was surprised by how much shorter they were (probably since they're much older). Also the plague marine's backpacks are HUGE compared to the chosen space marines.
