So I used to play Fantasy and 40k a lot just a few years ago. I got bored in general with the rules of 6th and stopped playing 40k and just played Fantasy. I was enjoying the game so much i just never got my army out anymore. Well then AoS happened and it is not my cup of tea.

So here is my question is 7th a reasonably balanced ruleset? (Perfect balance is not desirable as it can lead to a bland boring game in my opinion. (See those of us who played Kings of War and then realized its just not Random enough.))

Are my beloved Dark Angels viable? Especially Deathwing?

Lastly, Do you feel its worth it to invest 50 dollars on a book when my confidence in the company is low?

7th edition is not balanced. Many argue that 4-5th edition, despite having it's flaws, was the best ruleset. It's not so much the game is bad, many people enjoy it, it's that the rules are needlessly complicated and not very well written, if the YMDC section is to be believed.

Being a '7,5 Codex' (ie, released in 2015 or later), Dark Angels are very viable. Ravenwing is a strong army. Deathwing isn't quite as strong and one of their formations makes no sense on their own. But their Codex is miles better than what they originally had.

There are other ways to obtain the rules without spending £50.

YMDC = nightmare

You can't play mono DW anymore. Turn 1 deep strike is a thing of the past and you'll auto lose. That said, Ravenwing is super strong and greenwing also got buffed by quite a bit by the new book. When it comes to fielding a full battle company, (Lion's Blade) I think that vanilla marines do it better but we still get the same benefits as they do. Also, if you play against plenty of assault-based armies, overwatch at full BS will make you smile and your opponents weep.

7th edition 40k is a lot like BDSM these days. Only play with people you know and develop a safe word for when things get too intense. And It doesn't hurt to be a sadist or masochist as well.

You can technically play mono-DW by buying Dreads with Pods.

Mono-DW requires drop pod dreads or unbound but if you take a Ravenwing formation it's fluffy and will boost your competitiveness (if you care about that).

Ravenwing is basically tiptop competitive tier. Deathwing aren't quite that but they ARE the best termies in the game for what that's worth.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
