Hey all,

Long time wargamer jumping into AOS. I used to own a huge high elf army but sold them off as I wasn't a fan of 827th edition. Last week a local guy gave me a demo of AOS, and I had an absolute blast! One thing I realized quickly is that scenarios and terrain are the real balancing factors of the game, which I am a fan of. I've picked up a starter for myself and my roommate but am looking on the app and I don't see any free scenarios... Does anyone know of some?

Free scenarios no other than maybe fan made ones. All of the scenarios you can buy out of the app or you can buy the campaign books where they are in print from.

The SCGT2016 pack is pretty interesting: http://heelanhammer.com/scgt/

A basic way to play objective-based games is somewhat of the following:

- 3-5 objective markers on the board (either placed randomly, or evenly spread or whatever. The biggest note I'd make is to have at least 2x as many units on each side as objectives, or else you can end up with a defensive stalemate)
- 5 or 6 turn max

Scoring:

- Added up at end of every battle round
- 1 point for controlling an objective (can play with this, but I like requirement to have 5 models within 3 inches of it. Any opposing models in range means it's contested, even if it's a non-scoring unit, and no points are given)
- 1 point for killing the enemy general
- 1 point for killing the enemy's "blunt" unit (each side chooses a unit the other has to kill to score this)
- 1 point for not having your general killed by the end of the game
- 1 point for not having your blunt killed by the end of the game

You can add points for other things or tweak it as you like, but I like that basic framework.

Why are you giving points for killing the general and then giving points to the other guy for not letting his general die? Doesn't it make more sense to just give points for killing the general? It feels like a double up there.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

40k scenarios are probably fairly compatible.

You can do whatever you like, but I find it gives more range to swing things than a flat score for killing.

Go for the Clash of Empire Battleplan for the Warhammer World event:

http://warhammerworld.games-workshop.com/2016/02/01/clash-of-empires-announced/

The Battleplan is basically a scenario table alongside a balancing structure - so you might be playing an objective game or another type of game, randomly decided.

It's very fun and is designed for 30 models a side.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Here's another fan made one along with its Time of War rules:

I really love those SCGT scenarios!

Just remember that scenarios that have multiple objective markers don't scale down well, because at smaller model counts you don't have enough units to contest multiple objectives.
It is one of the things I am looking at due to running an escalation league where we're starting at small model count games (around 6 deployed pool choices from Clash comp - around 20-30 models for most armies).

At the moment we have a scenario that involves contesting a single objective in the table centre. It's been fairly popular so far, with special rules and terrain making it more interesting than just a clash in the centre and certainly far more interesting than a kill them all scenario.

Honestly I think to get started you don't need all kinds of crazy special rules like command abilities and time of war. Get out your terrain, discuss with your opponent what kind of game you'd like, set up and play. You can even put the terrain down first, and then decide what looks interesting to fight over, re-arrange slightly if necessary and get cracking.

A little self-serving, but if you are after free scenarios, I knocked together a mini-campaign (with some other bits and pieces) that you would be welcome to;
