Been playing 40k a few years now and decided I wanted to expand my gaming collection. Being a long time Star Wars fan, I chose X-wing. Just trying to get some forces together to start playing, mostly at home with my kids for now. Here's what I ordered-
-Original starter set
-tfa starter set
- rebel aces
-imperial aces
-y wing
-tie bomber
Does this seem like a decent group to get the ball rolling? Any other single ships I should plan on getting?

Really depends on which faction you want to play primarily, as they both have their ups and downs. Rebels, you might want to get a K Wing to get the turret which works well on Y Wings. Imperials are going to get a nice Imperial Veterans box soon, so really it's all about your preference.

Yes its a good start. Just be aware that you will end up getting sucked in and buying all the ships

I would recommend getting the tie interceptor single pack to go with the Impy Aces pack because Soontir Fel is godlike.

Yes that is an excellent start. You get excellent ships in all of those packs, and you have enough of a variety that you can get an idea of what craft you prefer and how you would want to expand.

Just be aware that you will end up getting sucked in and buying all the ships

@OP: It's too late for you already, for it has already begun!

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

Excellent. Just got what I liked and would be fairly balanced. I don't get out to the FLGS as much as I like, but my kids do like playing at home. Just finished a Calth box set that my 10 year old daughter absolutely loves to play.

Gotta love playing with the next generation. My 7 year old loves X-Wing.
FFG has done a great job with balance in this game. Just about every ship comes with usable upgrades. Everything files well right out of the box. So I wouldn't worry about balance as long as everyone has
Competitive is different. Specific ships want specific upgrades that are in different packs. Example, Soontir Fel (TIE Interceptor) wants Push The Limit (A-Wing or Imperial Aces) and Autothrusters (StarViper) to play competitively. As long as you build your collection slowly, you won't run into situations where you have a killer ship for one side without a match on the other.

As far as purchases, you want the basic ship expansion for those sets that you have big boxes. Having 2 or 3 of a ship in formation is better and an important skill to practice. That means you'll eventually want:
1-2 more TIE
1 X-Wing
1 TIE/fo
1 T-70 X-wing
1 A-Wing
1 B-Wing
1 Tie Interceptor

I'd also think about balancing lists 30 points at a time. 1 X-Wing Ace just about balances 3 Academy TIEs, for example.

My friend's kid is about 7 too, and he had a lucky run proton torps and bombs. He wants to run nothing but those now. And in a casual setting, it works fine.

I still haven't seen anyone recommend the Falcon yet. Arc Dodgers like Interceptors introduced early with no turret to counter can easily spoil the game. It's no fun to not be able to shoot someone while they dance around you and pick you apart. There's a reason autothrusters was introduced and now it's made things about even, but with no turrets, it's skewed heavily in the Imperial players favor.

Also it's The Millennium Falcon. The most iconic ship in Star Wars. Everyone loves Han Solo flying the Falcon even if twin laser turrets and Super Vader have made him somewhat obsolete in tournament play.

I think it is a good start. And welcome aboard the W-Wing shuttle!

If you pick up the Falcon as bocatt suggests, I recommend the Slave 1 / Firespray as a counter to it. The benefit of the Firespray is that it can play out of the box for Imperial, but if you end up getting Most Wanted, you can play it for Scum as well.

And also just a word of humorous caution that others have made. If you find that you enjoy this game, it is very much a game where you will want to buy every ship. Much moreso for me than any other miniature game (GW, Mantic, Corvus Belli are my background).

The Falcon and Slave 1 are on the short list. So you can mix and match the cards that come with the various box sets? And I know a few things about going all in. I started 40k back in Feb 2013 and I've gotten a few models built and painted. This pic is a bit old...I've added a couple more tanks and infantry.

That's half the fun. Only restriction on mixing the cards are upgrade type, and some Faction/Size/Title restrictions.

Indeed. You'll never get a card in a box that can't be used on the ship it comes with, but often the best use for it is on a different ship.

The Starviper, for example, generally gets ragged on as a bit second-rate for its price (or at least, the generic one does - the Virago title makes a big difference), but it's forever out of stock because the accuracy corrector is amazing on the TIE advanced and autothrusters are amazing on A-wings and a nearly automatic choice on TIE interceptors.
