Scenario. My opponent's turn he decides he wants to assault 1 of my units with 3 of his units. He moved 2 units Praetorians in close then charged and made it into base contact with my unit. Before any fighting he decides he also wants his triarch stalker to join the fun. He rolls enough to be in base contact with my unit but there was not physically enough space for him to fit his stalker to get base contact with my unit.

The rules only seem to cover 1 unit assaulting 1 unit and 1 unit assaulting multiple units but not multiple units assaulting 1 unit. So the question is, did the stalker fail his charge because there wasn't room for him to reach my unit?

Yes,me must make it to base contact.

The rules actually say that if you can't reach the target, you can't declare an assault. Could his Triarch Stalker reach your unit? No. Therefore, he should never have rolled dice in the first place. The assault wasn't legal.

Ultimately, you have to be able to physically reach the target unit. Most people just think this means to be within X" (usually 12) and hope for a good charge roll. You also need to be able to move at least one model up into base to base contact or you haven't actually reached the unit. There are a whole host of reasons this might not be possible... in a narrow alley between terrain features, surrounded by another unit, etc.
