Riptide – Ion Accelerator, Fusion gun - Early Warning Override,
While I think it’s a strong list, I hadn’t tested the riptide wing before the tourney as I had just bought the third one on Friday. I also had never used hawks before, which also factors in later.
My First Opponent: TJ’s Flyrants
FLyrant
FLyrant
FLyrant
FLyrant
FLyrant
Dimachaeron
Malenthrope
3x Mucloid Spores
30x Gaunts
Tervigon
Mission: 6 standard objectives, all secondary for all missions are maelstrom, tertiary kill characters
I got first turn and spread out across the board (my first mistake.) My riptides shaded left with the one squad of bikes and spiders (partly due to the fact he left his spores on the table even though they were in reserve, I didn’t figure this out until the game stated.) The lynx and two other bike squads were on the right, with a squad of spiders hiding in the ruins.
My opponent castled up out of range of the riptides, behind terrain, in order to give himself a good save. He failed to seize and the game begins.
First turn, I manage to take out the Malenthrope with a lucky shot from the lynx, I also am able to take out one tyrant with the lynx’s large blast and a squad of warp spiders. I put two wounds on his warlord. All other shooting fails. He flies up and destroys a squad of bikes and two spiders with psychic scream, and then guns down the lynx with haywire templates and his S6 guns ( I do not make a singe 4+ jink save.)
Second turn: Hawks come in by the flyrants (big mistake) and I promptly forget about their blast, but it wouldn’t have helped much. Riptides hail fire and the rest of the army slides towards the flyrants. Shooting sees another flyrant go down, but that is the only damage I do. His turn the flyrant group takes a right turn and starts heading down my board. His spores come in and sit in the middle of the board. His tervigon spits out a bunch of gaunts. He shoots or screams down one riptide, guns down the hawks and puts a wound on another riptide.
Third turn: I assault the gaunts to get a maelstrom point with my knight. The rest of my army tries to get behind his flyrants or moves to secure objectives. Shooting sees me take out one spore, and put a wound on a tyrant (while he never made any FNP rolls my shooting was awful.) In assault my knight charges but his hammer of wrath attack is saved, and he mostly flubs his attacks killing only one gaunt, his stomps do better killing 7 but a single gaunt ties me up. His flyrants continue down my board the 3 vector strike a riptide but all fail to wound. He screams and shooting kill 2/3 of the last scatter bike squad and another riptide. In assault his spore mines kills the full squad of spiders and he charges my wraithknight with the DImachaeron. We each do three wounds to each other and stomps kill the last gaunt.
Turn 4
I finally get behind his flyrants and the last riptide moves to my right. My lone scat bike goes to chase an objective on his side of the board. Shooting sees his warlord go down but little else. In close combat he takes my wraithknight down to its last wound and I promptly miss with all of my attacksand do no damage with stomps. His turn, he goes into jump pack mode with the last two flyrants and moves towards the objectives on my center. His 30 gaunts come in and kill my lone biker. His tervigon has been slowly moving towards my objective on the right, guarded by my seer and his cannon squad and now is almost right on top of them. His shooting puts a wound on the riptide and takes out the aforementioned biker but nothing else. His DImachaeron easily kills my scrub of a wraithknight, and hangs out on his side of the board. He also charges my 3 man Spider squad with his tervigon and kills all but the exarch who hit-and-runs out of combat.
Turn 5
My riptide moves to try and draw his tyrants off the central objective, and there is little other movement. Fearing a charge, I decide to shoot and charge the tervigon but only remove 3 of its wounds and lose a biker. My last spider moves on the double and holds another central objective close to the gaunts. He splits his tryants apart to control two different objectives. He tries to shoot the spider with his gaunts but he jumps 11” to contest the objective between the tyrants. In the end this does little beside save my riptide, as he still gets gunned down but it forced him to pick between claiming and objective and killing my tide (#MoraleVictories)
TJ 28/30 points, Me: 20
Game ends on turn 5, I have a lone riptide and 1 bike and a farseer. He holds 3 objectives to my zero. He would go on to win the tourney, and I have the small victory of being the only person who did not give up the maximum battle points to him, yay?) This was also my first time playing against flyrant spam so I learned a lot of things I should have done better.
Game 2: Dennis’s Daemons
Lord of change
Lv 3 Tzentch herald
Lv 3 Tzentch herald
Lv 1 Slanesh herald on a steed
3x 15 horrors
11 Daemonettes
14 seekers
15 Khorne Hounds
3 Flamers
This mission was old school kill-points so it was a bad matchup for Dennis. The whole game boiled down to me running away for the first two turns, and when he did get close enough to charge with his hounds, my warithknight charged them and stomped them all to death. He did get his revenge in rolling an 11 on the warp-storm table and having my farseer kill himself via the test. My tactic also meant that I wasn’t’ able to get maelstrom objectives easily and ended with only 5 out of the 8 points possible. The tertiary objective was for each player to nominate a piece of terrain on their side of the board and treat it as an objective worth 2 points each. I held mine with a lone biker and would have held his too, except a lone horror made both of his 4+ saves gah!
Dennis’ points: 21 Me: 24 (total 44)
Game Three: Alan’s Eldar
(The only other Eldar player there ironically enough.)
Farseer
Exarch with a fusion gun
3x 5 Dire avengers
3 Wasp walkers with scatters
6 hawks
10 warp spiders
6 Fire dragons in a wave serpent
New FW wraithknight with scary torrent cannons
Harli Cast of players.
This game went quite well for me. Early on a lost a few bikes to his 10” pie plate and lost a few wounds on my wraithknight, but I was able to eliminate his objective holding Dire Avengers, his wraithknight, and his death jester by turn 2 (I went second.) I also got lucky when he charged my wraithknight with the walkers and his blitzing Solitaire. I survived their attacks with a single wound left, punted the Solitaire with a “6” stomp and killed two walkers with my sword. After that it was mostly cleaning up his straggler units. I tabled him by the bottom of 4.
Alan: 18 Me: 30 (Final count 74/90 points)
Once the tallies were done I came in at 4th place out of 18 people, and missed out on third by a single point. It was a little disappointing, to be so close, but it was my first tourney so I am happy with where I stand.
