Okay. Here's my conundrum.

I've starated into Imperial Fists for 30k, and the basic theme I'm going for is Very "mid city Seige/defense" so less mud more broken ruins and concrete dust as far as weathering.

But I'm having issues working out bases for basic troops that represent this but stand out a bit from "cork painted like concrete".

I wanted something that shows more building interior. Tiles and such of once grand Imperial structures and palaces reduced to ruins. I welcome all suggestions!

Check out some of the basing on my models in my gallery.

A tip for making flooring for bases quickly and easily is to get a circle cutter (these are like graphical compasses but with a blade in place of a pencil).
These are dirt cheap and can be bought from craft shops that do paper and card stuff and you get a few extra blades for them, which you'll need.

Next you'll want to get some A4 sized sheets of textured plasticard, you can get them in a range of patterns such as bricks, tiles and diamond shaped grill patterns, even stone work and cobbles.

Then take your circle cutter, set it to the diameter of the top part of the base you want and cut a disc out, stick it on and done. You can stick rubble, bits of shaped plastic and any junk you want on top, maybe make a mix of basing rubble with broken up sprue, sand , bits of cork or whatever, mixed with some PVA then use that to apply the look of blasted rubble strewn about.

Another thing you can do is to get some thin plasticard, like 0.020" / 0.5mm, and if you want to do a carpeted interior search around for some image of a flooring pattern you like, print it out and stick it to the sheet and cut and stick them to the base. you can resize things and apply scorch marks etc in some graphical software, besure to seal the paper or card as well if you are going to paint over it.

To make concrete or asphalt flooring I did as above but applied a few layers of some textured paint and washed & drybrushed.

hope that helps.

I'm also doing Fists but I'm intending to base mine for a Zone Mortalis like enviroment

at the keyboard

sorta the same issue I had

This is what I did about it:

I did do some cork, but I mainly grabbed some bits of sprue, a few paperclips, some left over cogs I had from another project, some textured plasticard (textured with a template I made out of hobby aluminum) and a rubble paste mix (made from other left over small sprue bits, misc pieces of stuff, and various size rocks).

I would have liked to use more bits from actual 40k buildings but I don't really have any.

Basically I used the pieces of plasticard to show different metal textures, the sprue generally I cut into shapes to be support beams that had fallen, some I drilled a couple holes and put paperclip wire in then painted to look like rebar. I also took a rectangle paper cutter (another of my scrapbooking tools) and made some 'bricks' out of funfoam.

Then I just tried to paint everything realistic colours, with several washes to help tie it together and make it look gritty. I didn't weather anything because it was meant to look newly destroyed.

Anyway, hope this gives you some ideas at least!

I... actually don't know. Help?

Use plasticard to make sidewalks, cork could be nice for walls and stuff. Thin cardboard (the stuff from cereal boxes) could be good for tiles.

I'll save this thread for tips.

+1 for tiled pattern plasticard. Or if you want a lower-tech dilapidated look, you can cut squares of plasticard yourself and smooth the edges - but this can be a lot of work.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I appreciate them all and they've given me some great ideas.
