So my GW Choas Black primer was getting a little low and i wanted to prime my destroyed Rhino. I went and purchased for the first time an Army Painter matt black primer. I primed my rhino and a marine i had then.. this happened;

Hes now a shiny clusterfeth of sticky glossy-like black.. :O Its been 20+ mins and hes still shining.

I don't understand, this surely is not the result of any matt black primer?.So user error? I shaked that can WELL, sprayed onto blank card before applying to the model, was 30cm away when applying. The only thing i can think of was the temperature? I've noticed the cans to be a lot colder to the touch than GW primer, also its 2'c / 36F where I am now..

So I went ahead and grabbed my GW black primer and gave 5 models ago about 15mins after trying the army painter primer, I wanted to test if the temperature would effect the results ;

Turned out fine. So is this how the army painter primer is? or have I got a bad can?

This is the tank.. its very shiny and left a strange texture, but i can work with it for the purpose of this rhino - but currently i think i'll avoid army painter primers in the future!

Best guess: Not shaking it long enough OR someone before you didn't shake it and used it, leading to badly mixed proportions.

I have no clue how Dakka's moderation work. I expect it involves throwing a lot of d100 and looking at many random tables.

Army Painter Primers are the sole reason I got an airbrush.
That stuff screws up SO easily and is such a mess.
Sticks to the minis like tar, so stripping is almost impossible with regular means.

If it works it's perfect. If it does not however...

Well, now I've got trouble with Vallejo Primer scraping off easily, so pick your poison I guess.

Wow that's not good. I've never had a problem with AP primers and I have emptied quite a few cans. They do squirt at a tremendous pace, more so that Citadel sprays, so perhaps over spraying might be the issue?
Otherwise I can only imagine that the contents wasn't mixed enough.

I'd avoid spraying in this weather personally, wait for some sun, heat and low humidity.

where did you leave the models to dry? and how long had it been after priming that you took those pictures?

if you left the models outside to dry: that's a no-go in this weather. Beyond that, maybe you didn't mix enough? I generally use a matt primer from lowes and I've yet to have an issue.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

That strange texture usually occurs when it is to humid outside. that shine might happen when the coat is too thick.
