Hey all,

I'm running a series of narrative 40k events and I was toying with the following army selection rules for the next one. Any feedback would be appreciated.

2v2 tournament, 1000 points per player per game. 3 games.

Players bring a 3000 point battleforged list to the event. This represents the forces their army has deployed to the current sector. Each game, they may select up to 1000 points from this list to use during that game (this happens before new pairings are assigned but after the mission is revealed). This 1000 point selection does not have to be battleforged - it retains any command benefits from the original 3000 point deployed forces list as it is still considered part of that main army.

During the game, any unit that is completely wiped out is lost for the remainder of the tournament, except for a player's warlord. Players do not need to have all 3000 points physically present at the tournament as long as they can sub in a destroyed unit for another unit in their 3000 point list. For example, I put 3 10 man tac squads in my list. Game 1, one of the squads is destroyed. In game 2, I can field my 'second' tactical squad in place of the destroyed squad. This way, a player only needs 1000 points of models to play but those with 3000 points get more options between games.

Units that are not wiped out completely can be re-used in subsequent games.

Questions:
Has anyone ever run an event like this before?
What do you all think of this type of event?
What are the challenges you think would present themselves in running this type of event?

I'll start off by saying that I like the concept. It could make for a fun event.

Problems I see with it though:
If warlord comes back at full strength, and units come back at full regardless of casualties unless fully destroyed, you could see some ultra-beat stick HQs or deathstars.
If the force you table doesn't need to be battle forged, you could see some people abusing that by just not putting 'tax' units on the table but getting the benefits of good formations. Eg in 3000 pts you can make a decent Daemon decurion if you only need to put 2 units of horrors on the table instead of 9... Even in a CAD you can still avoid troops taxes or unlocking characters.

We played something similar once.

I'd suggest...

1. Start with 3,000 points. No particular structure is required. In other words, this is essentially 3,000 points of Unbound units.
2. Each round should be 1,000 points and should be Battleforged.
3. When a unit is fully destroyed, cross it off the 3,000 point list. You can't use it in subsequent rounds.
3. You never cross off your last HQ or your last two Troops choices. This ensures that you'll always be able to field a legal Battleforged army.

I like this much more. With 3,000 points to bring in just choosing 1,000 of it w/o Battleforged, it's a license to just pop in a few OP units consistently. A possible variation would be games (even, say, 1250 points) with the additional requirement that "All units must be played in at least one game."
