I'm seeing more and more lists online of people bringing just the Aspect Host or the Crimson Death formation with just a Combined Arms detachment. From what I understand this is not legal, right? Aren't you required to bring a Battle/Windrunner Host for this to be legal? Am I missing something?

Edit: Example: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/682730.page List has no Battle/Windrunner Host, but does have an Aspect Host.

You're missing the fact that they're Formations in their own right. There is no rule that forbids them from being used outside of the Craftworld Warhost.

Provided they have a Formation datasheet, of course, (which those are, I believe, the OP even stated as such).

Not all of Choices are Formations, like the Wraith Contructs, I believe...

By the data sheet logic, all of these formations have a datasheet in the codex. So where is the information stating what is a datasheet independent formation and what isn't?

Looking at the Codex, all I see is "1-12 per Guardian Host" next the list of Aux formation options which would imply that at least 1 Guardian Host is required to field any 1 Aux formation.

Look at the symbol in the upper left corner of the datasheet. Is it for a Battlefield Role (HQ, Troops, etc.) or is it a Formation? Remember a Formation is a special type of Detachment and can be fielded as such while the others can not since all models must be a part of a Detachment.

To elaborate on what Ghaz just posted, the symbol with 3 skulls in a circle is the symbol for a Formation.

All the Datasheets in Codex: Eldar Craftworlds are either HQ, Troops, etc or Formations. The Warhost simply gives you an alternative method to organize the army, which includes a "core" formation and "Auxiliary" choices.

Not all Auxiliaries are Formations, as stated the "Wraith Construct" or "Outcasts" allows you to take 1 unit from its list, none of which are Formations and can only be taken as Auxiliaries if fielding the Warhost.
The Aspect Host, Crimson Death, Dire Avenger Shrine, etc are all Formations that can be taken as is from their Dataslate, or as an Auxiliary for a Warhost.

I see now! Thank you for clarifying! I didn't notice that a few of those Aux formations didn't have datasheets.
